OBC Hack Question?
Can anyone post a close-up picture of the pins that plug into the cluster connector?
I don't see why a short piece of wire terminated to a couple of pins should cost $12~$20 + shipping :eek: May be I can source the pins and make them available to everyone else for a fraction of the cost. TIA |
I bought some of VW wires to do the OBC hack. I'll take them to a local electronics store and see if I can determine what type of molex connectors they are. I'll post my results later this week. :D

I just tried to find some of the connectors locally when doing an ipod cable installation on my CDR220. I could not get them at Radio Shack or at another local audio installation shop. I found them on line in either the UK or Europe and did not order them. If you can source them it would be great as the cost of the VW wire is alot for what it is. I ended up finding an unused telephone cable in my tool box and splicing the end of that to my ipod connector to fix the connector I broke.

I went to a local electronics shop with the wires called out in OBC hack on the Pelican web site. Searching their catalog for these Molex connectors is not easy, and there is no certanty if I found one that is close, that it will fit. Sorry.

Here is a link I found for the molex website that lists the connectors. If you navigate around the website, there is a list of phone numbers with a number for the US distributor. Please let us know if you have any luck getting ahold of the connectors. Thanks. John

The -010 connector is a Female connector used in the dash. It is square. The outside dimension is 2.00mm ( .079 in) X 2.00mm (0.79in).
Length is 7.11mm (0.280in) The -090 is a male connector used for the stalk. It is rectangular. The outside dimension is 1.87mm (0.073in) X 2.09mm (0.082in). Length 6.4mm (0.25in). All measurements were made using a vernier caliper and 58 year old eyes, so no guarantee on their accuracy. I used the link provided and searched the Molex catalog for over two hours before I gave up trying to find these @#$%! tiny connectors. If someone can find them in the Molex catalog, the next question is how many thousand do you want/need? So then one has to go to the Mouser catalog and hope Mouser stocks them and they will sell you only a few. Somethings make me wish I was working on a car made in Detroit. ;) |

Thanks for providing those measurements. There is a lot of chatter on various boards about how 009 pins should be used on 2001- cars all the way around. Apparently, people are having a hard time inserting the 010 pins into the black connector housing that plugs into the dash on the later cars. Now, the fact that you are calling the 009 a male connector is very puzzling to me. As for sourcing these connectors, I was able to find the connectors that linklaw provided a link for above in the Mouser catalog, and it can be ordered in small quantities. 45750-1112 Molex Terminals |
I'm wrong about the -009 being a male connector. I was making that assumption by looking just at the -009. The opening in the end looked too small to be a female connector.
The -009 female connector fits the pins in my 2002 4 stalk assembly. I have not received the black plug socket, so I can't comment on how well -009 or -010 fit it. Since the -010 is rectangular and not square, maybe the difficulty people are having is due to the -010 being rotated 90 degrees? I'll repost after I get my black plug. It should be soon. I performed the OBC hack with the VW wire/connector part. I would NOT recommend fabricating your own using a molex connector. The fit between the wire and the molex connector must be EXTREMELY tight, and you're not going to get that by squeezing it on with a pair of pliers or whatever.
Given the amount of time and effort it takes to do this job, it's not worth skimping on that one part, IMHO. |
I received the -040 connector. The -009 pins can be gently forced into the -040 Connector (black plug) but the little retaining flap, which is part of the -040 connector, cannot be locked into position.
The -010 pins easily slide into the -40 connector, and the locking flap snaps shut. The -010 pins can be put in rotated 180 degrees, but the locking flap won't close. From my experience: If you are going to do the OBC/4-stalk hack, follow the Pelican directions. Purchase the -009 wires, the -010 wires, and the -040 Connector. If you are going to put in dash switches, then maybe just purchasing the -009 wires will work, depending on the connectors needed to attach the wires to the dash switches. :) |

I have completed the OBC hack and I have no output display. I used my Durametric software to turn on the OBC, but there is no dispay on the instument cluster. I have a 2001 S. Question, I put the new wires into the Grey connector. This is the left most connector when looking at dash with the gage cluster removed. Is this the correct connector. Some of the OBC hacks indicate it should be the center connector.

No, the grey connector is the one. Did you hookup the ground wire?

Yep, ground wire hooked up and I verified it was grounded with a meter. Since I turned on the OBC, shouldn't at least one of the OBC displays be present on the bottom of the tachometer?

You should. Are you using the 4th stalk? All I can say it to check all your connections.
BTW, on my 2002, that grey connector had only one wire going to it before the hack. |
