Gear Oil 75W-90
hello guys.
thinking about changing the transmission oil in my car. what will be a recommended brand? 2001 Boxster S 6 speed trans. |
Everyone of our customers that have tried anything other than the OEM (a full synthetic) gear oil, and that is just about all of the aftermarket stuff out there, have all ended up draining it out and going back the the OEM product due to poor shifting, noise, etc. after only a short time.

How often do you recommend to change the gear oil? . |
Once again we meet.
And once again I will take your advice.
Is there an online source I can order it, or just go to the nearest dealership? By the way, I got the Wix 51042 oil filter as you recommended, looks a little bit small for a 3.2 engine. |

As for the Wix 51042, this is one example of where size can be deceiving. It is the filter designed for the 6 and 7 liter LS engines series in Corvettes. That unit can flow over 11 gallons of oil a min., well beyond what your engine can pump. If you cut one open and measure the total surface area of the media, you just might be surprised how much is in there. It is a great filter, usually also at a great price...... |
thanks JFP
It is a pleasure reading your posts.
I appreciate your patients and your detailed answers. That’s what happens when the last time you replaced an oil filter was 15 years ago:D |
one more
i found this one on Suncoust website.
Manual Transmission Fluid - 75W - 90:Porsche Parts & Porsche Accessories - Wholesale Porsche Parts & Tequipment - Cayman Panamera Cayenn is that the one? |
Looks like it; the Suncoast group have been pretty good, but give Sunset a phone call (they currently do not have a parts website), they are often cheaper, even including the freight. I get a lot of stuff from them, and have used them for many years.
|
Thanks for the recommendation. I will call them tomorrow.

I used the gear oil from Sunset. Here's my UOA from the factory fill:

Ordered the oil today.
The guy was very kind and helpful.
The price was 24$ for the liter (4$ cheaper then Suncoast) and will be shipped to me today. I told them JFP sent me so they gave me another 50% discount LOL………. just kidding :D Any way, I’m definably going to check them out every time before buying an OEM part. Thanks JFP. |

Porsche gear oil....
...is expensive but not really that bad.
Considering if you were to fill with 3 liters of synthetic gear oil, you'd find it ranging from $14 to $20 (valvoline to Royal Purple or Redline). Given the reports that some owners have not been happy with the aftermarket products, the OEM stuff is not bad, say and extra $15 to $30 for the whole job...not much for something done so infrequently. |
