I propose a ban...
Ladies and Gents,
If I may be so bold (since I am rather new to the forum, but as RandallNeighbor pointed out that I must be quite bored because I post during the day) as to propose a ban on the words "Pontiac Solstice". I feel those two words suck the life force out of an awesome forum such as this one. I propose we refer to that car as "that car" or "sorority girl car" or "the moped of cars" or something to that effect. What could be worse...A new Volkwagen Cabrio? Death to the two seat grocery getter. Remarks Complete. |
Well....
One thing that is nice about this board is the general absence of car-bashing. OK we make the occasional smirk on the Z4 or the SLK or now the Solstice. But I'll say one thing that I think is really cool about this board is that the members seem to be pretty level headed about cars. With that I'll say that the Solstice is a good step for American cars! It give the Corvette club another option to buy American, but at a cheaper price point. I'm guessing it will compete more with the Mustang convertible. I can't imagine it will ever challenge our Boxsters for the top of the pure sportscar performance. |
Rail, you should have created a poll on this thread. Then people could vote.
I think you know how I'd vote already. |
I also feel our members are about as civil as ANY forum I have ever visited. Makes it a pleasant place to visit for sure!!!!!!!!!
Hats off to you all. |
ok...I offer my apology and hope this crazy video clip makes up for my zealousness. Any ideas what nationality the narrator is or what speed this car may be going? Cheers!
http://www.guzer.com/videos/bmw_drift.php PS. Just tried the link...doesn't work from here. You have to cut and paste, but it is worth it. |
He was probably only going like 40mph. The wide angle lense distorts the speed.
For my part, if I was one of the cars he nearly hit, I'd IMMEDIATELY: 1) downshift to 2nd, keeping the clutch depressed 2) redline my Box 3) pop the clutch 4) make a tire-smoking U-turn 5) chase that **************************** down [note, my first use of swearing in a forum ever, I'm so mad after seeing that video] 6) run him off the road, YES, repeat: RUN HIM OFF THE ROAD, REGARDLESS of the danger of damage to my beloved Box 7) get out and beat the living crap out of him There might have been a mother and a child in one of the oncoming cars. There is NO excuse for that kind of moronic behaviour. |
Haha have people been talking about the Solstice here!? I hadn't noticed. I actually like the way that thing looks, amazingly. I think I like it more than the upcoming Sky. Now that Mazda has gone and broken my heart with the redesigned Miata, I have to find some other cheap roadsters to love. :(
|
<PrepareForFlames>I think there's quite a lot of similarity between the Solstice & Boxster in that they're both passionate designs, beautifully sculpted, well-proportioned, and *perhaps* even timeless.</PrepareForFlames> :)

prepare for flames? It ain't flames you need to worry about from me!
:barf: Prepare to wipe off this instead :barf: You'll not find any Solstice owners who wouldn't have purchased a Boxster instead if they'd had the money, the credit or the balls to do it. Like the Mitsubishi Eclipse, it's gonna have 80% women driving it. |

Don't get me wrong, I like Boxsters, but I think it would take a Ferrari to be significantly more fun than my MR2. (now ducking) |
I guess I better not post anymore about how civil we all are!!!!

Now, for a car to run in a low cost "spec" class (a la Spec Miata) it would be a blast, because there would be no need to carry anything but me and a tank of gas... :D |
Wow...I'm at a loss for words...wow. I can't believe the merits of the Solstice and MR2 are being debated here.
|
Hmm, everyone complains that the Boxster is underpowered and we're talking about the MR2 which has about half the power of the Boxster. I have rode in one and they are fun cars but they hardly give 10% of the experience that the Boxster does much less 90%.
|
OK, I love my Boxster tremendously, but I have to say that I was extremely impressed with the Honda S2000. Tight, good engine (revs up like a motorcycle), and quite hard to break loose whipping around hairpin turns. Overall, $24K+ well spent, IMO.
That being said, it's still only a Honda.. |
If push came to shove, I would rather have a Solstice than a Crossfire. But there is no reason here to be snobby about other cars -- that kind of attitude should be reserved for non-Porsche owners. What reason do we have for inferiority complexes, that would lead us to bad mouth less expensive cars?

Except for the Braun eletric shaver grill, I like the Solstice, particularly the speedhumps (?). I wish I could see a boxster with the speed humps in person, it just looked soso in the limited photos i've seen.
Isn't that crossfire pricier than the boxster? |
Gents,
I did the work for you...here are two message boards with people that love to talk about those two cars. www.pontiac-solstice.org www.chrysler-directory.com/chrysler-crossfire-message-board.html |

*For the money* the MR-2 and Miata are incredible machines. Don't know about the Solstice yet, but time will tell. Quote:

chick car
Its funny to hear you all think of the solstice as a chick car--what do you all think the Boxster is? Everyone tells me my Boxster is a chick car. I know you all hear the same thing - you know you are lying if you say otherwise. I seriously doubt anyone on this forum that owns a Boxster is taller than 6 foot and weighs more than 180. If you are any bigger you would not fit in the car and if you tried you would look like you were wearing the car.
|
They did a whole show on "two and a half men" recently with the Boxster as a chick car being the punch line.
Hmmmmmmm! |
Football player....6'2" 220 lbs... I sit with the seat all the way back and my shoulders barely clear the doors. I fit quite well in the cockpit.
|
Although I find the design of the latest MR2 less than masculine... the original MR2 was my first car and a blast to drive and own. I tell people the Boxster is like a "grown-up" version of my old MR2. Which isn't too far from true.
Thirty years from now I hope I'll be fortunate enough to have a pristine, fully restored first generation MR2 parked beside my daily driver Porsche. |
I can't imagine an inexpensive car brought out by a marginal, GM sub-brand being a threat to anything except the maker (perhaps Mazda) of another inexpensive car?!
I don't understand the defensiveness... Jim |
I'm 6'4" and the Boxster fits well enough. Want small and cramped? Try a Crossfire.
|
Amen lemonjello.
