The motor is just the beginning. Then you need a 6 speed tranny, complete exhuast, new intake, ECU, wiring harness, and a bunch of other stuff including custom made pieces. Got $30k?

You're right though... a 3.4 or a 3.6 conversion is something I dream about all the time.

will the 996 3.6l engine direct fit in the boxster no problem
cause one is Rear engine and one is mid engine

I believe it will fit, but because of the $$$$ factor, most put in 3.4's. Both engines go in "backwards" in a boxster.

986 and 996 engines spin the same direction, the transmissions are different in order to direct the power in different directions.

According to my tech, the engine will fit just fine. However, as the first response pointed out .........

Oops! I knew one of them was different... just thought it was the engine. I guess this answers the question, "Can I re-use my existing tranny?" NO!

Wrong

Q: Can I use existing tranny / gearbox
A: No

Is wrong !!!

You have to use the existing tranny / gearbox. Engines of 996/986 spin the same side. The difference is in the gearbox. A boxster gearbox has an extra set of wheels to reverse the direction. So the correct answer is : YES YOU HAVE TO USE a Boxster tranny, a 996 tranny won't work (unless you like 1 forward gear and 6 reverse gears ;-)

Mark.
