Anyone remember all that ranting I did about RMS failures a couple of months ago here on the forum after reading the review of the new 987S in Excellence?

I got busy and wrote a letter to the editor. They published it in the newest edition of the magazine, and added a lengthy editor's reply to my letter—they did their best to make Porsche look good, saying PCNA has even replaced engines free for second and third owners of 986/996 cars. After all, if they acknowledged Porsche produced defective engines, people would stop buying the cars and their magazine would lose revenue.

Thx for sharing I willl check that out. I remember they said they had a RMS failure on a recent 987 S test car. The car was run hard, but that is still no excuse.

they have no solution to the problem. That's why its crept into the 987.
But since its only happening to certain cars (good luck finding stats) its cheaper to service the incidents than doing an insanely expensive and unattractive recall.

I noticed after my recent oil change that I'm down one tick on my oil level.
is this normal?

Yeah, that is pretty normal. I have to add about 1/4 to 1/2 a quart every 2k miles or so.

If the RMS leaks to the point where it should be replaced, will I be able to notice the oil on the garage floor? Where would the oil drip from?

Yes, you will notice the stain. It is just at the juncture of the trans/engine, I would guess about rear axle location or so.

SoCal, with all those new panels covering the engine on the 987 it might not appear in the center of the car.

My 97 986 only has panels back to the engine. The cool picture you inserted above looks like they cover most of the engine, but not the cats or exhaust, for obvious reasons... HEAT.

Unfortunately though, leaving the back of the undercarriage uncovered like that kind of ruins a good portion of the aerodynamic benefit of having an undertray. There is a lot of wind turbulence created by the rear bumper cover and all that stuff back there--it's basically a big scoop that's scooping up air from underneath the car.

On every race car I've worked on, adding an undertray that just covered up the rear portion of the car up to even just the rear subframe had a tremendous effect on the car's handling and drag. We did leave the mufflers uncovered though and I suppose that might be a bit more difficult on a Boxster... :)
