Use the key, dummy!
I left my Boxster in the garage for a week while I took a holiday vacation. I came back to the car and pressed the "door unlock" button on the remote, and oh no! The remote didn't work! This is my only key and for a moment I panicked. How was I supposed to get in the car if the remote didnt work!!
I got closer to the car, the remote didnt work. I went around to the other side of the car, the remote didnt work. I put the remote reeeaallly close to the windshield, but it still didn't unlock the car. Then....
Duh... put the key in the door lock and twist! :o
The interesting thing is that then the alarm went off!! And then I pressed the remote and it turned off the alarm. And after that the remote works just fine. It appears that the car alarm went into a hibernate mode and had to be woken up with this method. I couldn't find any mention of it in the manual. :p
