Steering wheel?
So I'm really not a fan of the 986 steering wheel. Doesn't really do the car justice. Do the 987 ones fit? Or did they make optional ones that actually look good?? I really don't know where to look for options, are there websites?? lol

my 3 spoke one is just fine, although I saw the 4 spoke ones and they are kind of plain and not very "sporty"

Early steering wheel-mounted airbags were much larger, and thus required more surface area of the steering wheel. Modern bags are smaller and thus provide for more flexibility in design, making the 3-spoke on the later models possible. I owned a '98 and have an '03 now, and much prefer the 3-spoke wheel in my '03. |
987 & 986 steering wheels have 2 major differences: the spline hole is 2x as big on a 987 and the 986 wheel has a collar around the edge while the 987 is flat. There is some foreign adapter thingy for a VW that supposedly will work, but with something as important as a steering wheel, why would you want to cobble it up?
Go with the Porsche 986 3 spoke wheel. As an old 986forum contributer once said, it looks like a pair of women's sexy underwear. http://986forum.com/forums/general-discussions/29130-steering-wheel-fitment-question-997-986-a.html |
I much prefer the padded 3 spoke 986 steering wheel from suncoast. Not sure why the factory 3 spoke is so thin.
|
I found the four spoke steering wheel in my 993 turbo was too thin and missing the hand grips at 10 and two. I sent it to Cars Dream (www.carsdream.com) in Poland and they did a great job. I liked it so much I sent them the one from my Boxster S. Just don't be in a rush!
Also, the color difference in the airbag and steering wheel are exaggerated in the photo. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...l/P1140502.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...l/P1140494.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...d/P1130927.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...d/P1130922.jpg |
So do all the 986 steering wheels fit on all 986's without any flaws?

Why going to Poland to redo and/or add padding to your steering wheel when there is a very good company that does it in Dallas Tx. Please see Dallas Custom Steering Wheel. I did order a custom built replacement steering wheel & e-brake. The result is unbelievable! If it’s time to redo your steering leather, please contact Don @ Dallassteeringwheel. They have a core exchange program so you will be able to get a credit for your old steering wheel and/or e-brake handle. See att. my fully customised steering wheel & E-Brake.

Help...
I have a porsche boxster 968 2.7 tiptronic. I want a smaller steering wheel, a replacement for the OEM part, with airbag and tiptronic controls. Anyone have an aftermarket replacement direct fit, or any ideas. I have long legs and with the seatall the way back, and lowered back I still cannot pedal without catching my knees and thighs.I am in the UK, so any help much appreciated. |

I like that Chuck

You could always go the after market route with a hub adapter. They don't look half bad, just not something I would personally do on my car! :D

I passed up a leather three spoke air bag with a silver crest. My bad. IMHO, they look much better. |
Hi nor wanting to hijack this thread, but I have had no response, so not sure if I posted in the right place.
I need a smaller diameter tiptronic steering wheel for my boxster 986. I cant use the paddles as I have reduced dexterity in my right hand, so it needs to have the switches like the oem part only smaller diameter maybe a flat bottom. I have even considered buying a s/h oem steering wheel and fabricating a flat bottlm, but im sure there is more engineering expertise on here. I have spent the last few days phoning suppliers, emailing shops internationally, and have come up empty, none of the aftermarket options, raid etc..offer the buttons.please help, there must be someone on this forum that has an idea. |
