I saw the email notice yesterday. The first thing that came to mind was WHY¡?¡

When I think "sports car" I dont think electric in the least. I wonder if they will really sell them
|
It says it's a concept(ish) car. I thought the first thing at first, but it's still cool technology. Doesn't mean they'll mass produce it, but it does mean that Porsche is still trying to stay cutting edge.

Why politics in a thread about Porsche's desire to do an electric prototype Boxster? :barf:
Europe is way ahead of us on the mileage issue because of their gas prices. Spent two week there this summer and the cars are smaller, diesel, have manual transmissions, not to mention the tons of scooters everywhere. It would be foolish for Porsche (or any other carmaker) not to explore electric technology. The Boxster is the most logical for conversion IMHO. |

Tesla has already demonstrated the pinnacle of e-power using current technology. I'm not sure what Porsche expects to do that is in any way better or different.
Furthermore, Tesla has proven that there is almost no market for a high performance, high cost e-sportscar. Tesla has only sold a little over 2,000 cars in their entire history. |

... and they have announced production of the roadster will cease very soon: inhabitat.com/tesla-motors-announces-it-will-stop-production-of-the-roadster-electric-sports-car/ :) |

as an aside, as i've said many times i have no issues with the theoretical exploration of purely electric cars. but, i don't think they're viable at the current time because they are very limited in range and still have to get their power from somewhere. so we offload the emissions from a tailpipe to a smokestack. seems to be shortsighted. i'm all for exploring the technology, but i don't like auto manufacturers trying to push electric cars as the solution. if i want a car to go 25-miles a day and sit overnight to recharge, a boxster would not be my first choice. however, some of the technology should filter down to future cars (not just p-cars) to make things more viable. |
