IMS Story. a HAPPY ONE !
Seeing my 01 S on this flatbed was actually a GOOD thing. :D
It meant it was on its way to get the LN Engineering IMS upgrade. I've owned it for 2 1/2 years. Was a CPO car with 2 years/24K miles when I bought it. Bought an extended warranty when it expired with the intent of getting the upgrade done this summer. Last few months I did not enjoy driving it at all. I made the analogy at one point it was as if someone was in the passenger seat holding a gun to my head. Yeah I had the aftermarket warranty, but if the IMS caused the engine to go, I wasn't looking forward to the inevitable war that was going to be waged in order for them to cover it. I have AAA. I said I have the money now to get this done. With my luck she woulda blew on the way to the Porsche Specialist. So what did I do ? I had it flatbedded over there at no charge. Was this close. Wasn't gonna risk it now. Happy to report she's done and back on the road and am back to enjoying driving it. Which is why I bought her in the 1st place ! http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j27/jdiba/preims2.jpg http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j27/jdiba/preIMS1.jpg http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j27/jdiba/preIMS3.jpg |
Love your analogy.
Enjoy driving alone! |
When you say "it was this close", do you mean the bearing they took out was bad? Single or double row? How bad was it, lots of play, seals disintegrated, chewed up balls?
|
Actually I meant I was "this close" to getting the upgrade done. I didn't want to
risk it happening while I was driving to the Porsche shop. I didn't ask the condition of the bearing. I didn't want to know. I had thought about that. By asking about it I guess I could have provided information to others about its condition, helping them make their own upgrade decisions I guess. I just looked at it from the perspective that I was getting it done so it didn't matter at that point. BTW 68K miles on the car. Didn't wanna risk it any more. |
It was the double row style. My guess is that the seal was probably in good shape with just a little bit of play. But don't know for sure. I can email my shop and ask
them. |
Please, inquiring minds (well, paranoid in my case) want to know.

Never allow someone to use chains on your car!! Insist on wheel straps.

I thought '99 was the last year for double row IMS bearings - am I wrong?
