Tip tutorial..or dude who stole my 1st gear?

OK so it has been several months now with UL 2 (a 2003 S) and my tiptronic and I must admit I am having a hard time adjusting (UL 1 was the 5 speed and my Audi A6 is a six speed manual).

So the car starts up in 2 gear and by 35mph it is already in 4th. At 45 I am in 5th gear and never get over 3000 rpm.

I have never driven any car that I am in 4th gear before leaving my sub division.

Is this right? I have used the tip to down shift to 1st gear but it will rapidly and automatically shift back up to 2nd.

Can someone please explain?

That sounds like the tip!

However, it is a pretty smart transmission (I actually love the Tip). It will "learn" your driving style (for the duration of the current trip) and will adapt the gear changes accordingly.

The only way to truly override the "too quick" gear changes is to put it in manual mode and hit 55 in 3rd :)

I DO wish there was some way Porsche (or aftermarket) would allow re-mapping of the "templates" in the transmission and allow for higher RPM changes between the gears while in Auto mode. Anyone know if that's possible with the PST2?

that's "grandma" mode.

to get to "grandson" mode, mash the pedal hard and release it quickly. it won't shift until absolutely necessary and won't upshift when you release.

when you start driving more "relaxed" it will go back.

as state said, otherwise use manual mode (i use manual most of the time)...

another thing i've learned (when in automatic mode) a quick tap of the pedal (or a complete mash to the floor) will downshift 1 gear, a quick double tap of the pedal will downshift 2 gears - say from 5 to 3, which it accomplishes quite quickly...

Occassionally my 2000 S Tip will start in 1st when I'm on a hill but I'm not sure whether it's detecting the hill or just thinking I'm driving sporty as I approached the hill crest in 2nd.

Is it a bad sign if the Tip starts using 1st gear?

It's an emissions/ range (MPG) thing.

As stated the tip S has adaptive learning and if you drive aggressively, you'll notice a significant change in shift mapping.

That said, it will not allow over-revs, it'll shift just shy of redline.

It does have a sort of primitive launch control though. At a stop, depress the brake and get on the throttle. You'll see it shift down to 1st gear.

Cheers!

Thanks for the heads-up on the launch control thing LB. At a stop light I only thought I had two choices, to shift into 1st manually or stomp on it when the light turns green and have the trans shift down to 1st. I like the thought of the car being in 1st, THEN hammer time.

LB wasn't that what we used to call a hole shot?

I should probably of mentioned that I purchased the car from a young female drive who had the engine replaced (yes IMS) - so Iam confident she probably really babied it after that experience. And I only have been going back and forth to work - so no chance really to get on it.

Guess I have some home work for this weekend! thx
