How do you tighten the nut on one of linkages for the convertable top?

When i was messing around under the top with the roof in access position, I found a small hex nut. about 12mm. Wondering where it came from I went exploring. As it turns it, it fell off one of the linkage arms that connects the convertable top to the body. The linkage joins the top with a white plastic ball joint head, and is in a terribly hard place to access right about where the roll bar meets the body.

I cannot get the nut back on the ball joint head, not because it doesnt fit, but because access is so horribly restricted in the area. I tried all roof opening positions, some are better than others, but the closest I can get to turning the nut is by sticking a long screw driver down and touching tangent to the nut, and tapping with a hammer. This of course does not work well, and it comes off again.
