Mass air flow sensor issue
 

Hi Guys

I have a 2006 porsche boxster 2.7, recently i had issues with RPM fluctuating on IDLE and also the car stalled twice and the pickup is lethargic.

My mechanic cleaned the Mass air flow sensor and indicates that MAF needs to be replaced.

My car seems to drive fine but the pickup is still not the way it's use to.

Can i drive with a MAF in not in good condition?
Is it safe with faulty MAF?
How are OEM MAF's (cheaper) compared to original?
Am looking at BOSCH hows the make?
Any places in toronto where i can buy MAF?

I am currently in the same boat. Although my car has not stalled I have been driving with a "bad" MAF for about a month. Gas mileage suffers and I am no expert but it can't be the greatest for the engine. I ordered one from vertex auto. They had the best prices on OEM MAF's. I am sure they will have the same MAF your car takes. Just make sure that the part number matches when you're order. It will say on the side of the MAF. Ship USPS (from florida) and the order should be there shortly (takes 10 days to get to Alberta USPS). :cheers:

You might have a bad MAF (they do fail) but I had the same idle problem with my 01. Try cleaning the induction system with a system cleaner [url]http://www.bgprod.com/products/fuelair.html[url] or something similar. I have over 211,000 miles on my Boxster and have never replaced the MAF sensor.

Whoa, 211,000 miles !!! That has to be the highest mileage boxster that I've heard
of ! :eek:

I have not seen or heard of any higher mileage Boxsters out there. I just changed the IMS bearing about 1500 mile ago, ready for another 200,000 miles!

Driving with a bad MAF isn't good for an engine. How bad it is depends on how the MAF is failing and how much error is in the output signal.

For example, if the MAF output is simply varying (when it should be relatively constant, like at idle), then you'll get a poor idle and other uneven running conditions.

Or if the MAF output is biased "high" signalling that more air is entering the engine than really is entering the engine, then the engine will run rich, maybe foul the plugs and you may get an O2 sensor or DME beyond compensation limit CEL because the DME will try to compensate for the rich condition but there is only so much it can do.

Somewhat worse would be the opposite, where the MAF signal reads "low" and the engine runs lean which can be damaging to some engine components. Again, the DME will try to compensate for this lean condition but there is only so much it can do.

General advice is kind of obvious; if the MAF is bad, replace it as soon as practical.
