Detailing day...OFFICIAL DATE is 8/21/05

Guys,

As many of you know, I own a detail shop in NYC. I have done this before locally and thought since many here expressed interest in detailing maybe to try it here. I was thinking of holding a detailing day at my shop where some of you guys can come down for the day (on a Sunday) and we will go over the different steps of detailing from start to finish. As a former Boxster owner I can show you everything from leather care, to convertible top treatment, to interior shampoo and extraction to complete paint treatment and finishing. We typically make this a hands on experience where you get to work on your own cars with professional aid and supervision. I will show you shortcuts and good tips to make annoying detailing mishaps go away! We can serve refreshments and snacks and have fun. Makes for some great photos and thread in weeks that follow.

Any interest here? :)

Gil

That is nice of you. I would be there if I was not 3,000 miles away.

We have had a few detail days over the years, usually put on by a company rep who is there just to tell us how good X-brand products are. It is like an infomercial.

So last year I did something different. A 996 friend is the PCA concours chairman or something like that. He is a concours judge and puts on a class so that other potential judges can learn. I got an independent Porsche shop to let us use their facility and he showed us how to detail a car. He went through all the products, what he liked and why he did not like some, and showed us how they worked on the cars. Hands on rather than a guy from Meguiar's with a bunch of products sitting on a table

We also arranged to have ding and paint chip guys there. They were brothers. One does the dings and the other does the chips. :D

Anyone with interest here? I will cross post it on other boards and get some other cars in too.

HEY STRYKE,

SOUNds like a great opportunity...I am def interested but I need a heads up to see if I can make it...

I'm in Boston...but it would be a great chance to visit my buddies in NY as well...

Where in NYC are you??

Brucelee 06-13-2005 06:23 AM

Any chance it can get video'd????

Porschekid 06-13-2005 06:56 AM

I wish you were closer, this sounds like an awesome idea.

Stryke 06-13-2005 07:00 AM

Porschekid, come on man, you're in Pitts, PA. Only about 4.5 hours away. I have gone further than that for car meets. Spend a weekend in NYC. Maybe we can all do dinner the night before. :)

Richard, I can set it up for video, no problem! Maybe we can make it a sticky so we can get it off the ground this summer. :)

Brucelee 06-13-2005 09:53 AM

Absolutely!

Good stuff!!!!!!!

Wish I'd know when Laura Bush's C5A Galaxy was on our west ramp - I would have caught a ride back there :)

Stryke 06-14-2005 08:38 AM

Where are all the East Coast members here? Non-Porsche owners welcome too. I will put it together if we get a minimum of 8 cars and a Maximum of 15.

rboutin 06-14-2005 03:32 PM

I'm interested...

Sounds like a great offer. I'd be coming down from Boston in my (new to me) 2001 986S. I lived in NYC for most of the 90's and would look forward to returning....

Guys, if you would like to make this happen please confirm your interest in attending here and I will post a list. Richard, would it be possible to stick this thread? :)

Brucelee 06-18-2005 06:21 PM

Done! Good luck!!!!!!

Stryke 06-20-2005 06:30 PM

Guys, I have 3 firm commitments so far from other sources. Lets get 7 more cars and lock it up at ten cars. I'll post more specific details and an agenda when we have at least 6 confirmed. :)

deliriousga 06-24-2005 04:10 PM

Stryke, what a fantastic offer!!

Man, I'd love to come but it would take me two days to get there and I can't take any vacation until mid-August. :( Please folks, sign up if you can go so we can get the video!! What an opportunity!

If you end up having it after August I would love to come up. We're swamped at the ol' architecture firm so no more vacation until Summer's over. I'm more than willing to drive two days to get to NYC (awesome place if you've never been) and learn to take care of the P-car beauties.

Thanks for your generosity Stryke!

Stryke 06-24-2005 04:16 PM

Thanks! :)

Guys, we'd have a BBQ there, raffles, and tons of fun. Lets go and get some commitments from this board. Would love to have Boxsters attend. :)

Stryke 06-26-2005 09:53 AM

Just finished a few steps on my car. Not a single scratch or swirl mark anywhere on it. Pics are in direct sunlight. Total time spent was about 45 minutes including the wax. :)

Detailing on Staten Island

Stryke,
Contemplating attending with my wife but it depends on the day you have it. I did not see a day posted or a target day yet? Any ideas when this will happen?

Stryke 06-26-2005 04:38 PM

I'd like to make it a Sunday in late July or early August. :)

Pilot2519j 06-27-2005 04:32 AM

Detailing day

Stryke,
The weekend of August 13-14 will be no good for us. Son's wedding.

Stryke 06-27-2005 05:37 AM

Gonna be way before then. :)

Stryke 06-30-2005 08:59 AM

OK, correction, we have set the official date for this event to Sunday 8/21/05. Here is the following information:

We will be closing down our shop for the day to outside customers. The cost to do this will be $99 per vehicle to cover all expenses below which will include the following:

* Closing down the shop for the full day.
* 2 passengers per vehicle. Any additional passengers are $15 each.
* Food and drinks for all in attendance throughout the day.
* Detailing chemicals and supplies to use and practice with.
* Full day of detailing instruction and tips and techniques along with shortcuts.
* Wet sanding, claying, compounding, polishing, glazing, waxing, buffing, maintenance schedules, engine detailing, dressing, supplies, costs, interior shampoo, leather care, the works.
* I may have my detailing teacher, Doug, Master Detailer for over 20 years and full time training director for Gliptone Manufacturing attend.

You will leave here knowing a full spectrum of why and how to detail a car, start to finish. We are limiting this to only 10 cars to allow for an intimate training session with hands on. We already have three solid cars confirmed and paid up. Please contact me for more info. We will have video made of this day and perhaps edit into a DVD.

Call Gil at 718-556-7226 for more info or email me. :)

Scratches

Would love to come down for detailing day, but too long a drive from
Toronto. Bought a 05 Artic Silver Boxster a few weeks ago. Loving it,
but some nimrod at the golf course looks like he scratched his golf bag
over the rear side of the car. Its not that deep, but would love some
suggestions on how to get rid of the scratches. Do you need to buff it
or is there another way.

Stryke 06-30-2005 11:45 AM

Come on, make a weekend in NY out of it. Not that bad of a drive. :)

sawni 06-30-2005 11:59 AM

Can't, going to a track day in Shannonville run by PCA on that weekend,
otherwise a drive thru the twisties of upper NY State sounds appealing.
Any info on how to fix the scratches?

deliriousga 06-30-2005 01:16 PM

Hmmmmm.

This may work for me if the wife gives me an ok. Only thing I'm having trouble working through is:

5: Take GA-400 S / US-19 S. 6.0 miles
6: Take the GA-20 exit- EXIT 14- toward SUGAR HILL / BUFORD. 0.3 miles
7: Turn LEFT onto GA-20 E. 14.2 miles
8: Merge onto I-85 N toward GREENVILLE. 209.0 miles
9: Merge onto I-77 N via EXIT 38 toward STATESVILLE. 124.8 miles
10: Merge onto I-81 N via EXIT 32 toward ROANOKE. 369.4 miles
11: Merge onto I-78 E via EXIT 89 toward ALLENTOWN. 125.6 miles
12: Take I-78 EXPRESS LN E toward EXPRESS / I-95 / NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE / HOLLAND TUNNEL / NEW YORK CITY. 8.8 miles
13: Take I-78 E toward I-95 / NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE / US-1-9 / PORT NEWARK. 1.1 miles
14: Take the US-1-9 N exit- EXIT 58B. 0.1 miles
15: Merge onto US-1&9 N / US-9 N / US-1 N via the exit on the LEFT. 7.0 miles
16: US-1&9 N / US-9 N / US-1 N becomes 12TH ST. 0.4 miles
17: 12TH ST becomes BOYLE PLZ (Portions toll). <0.1 miles
18: BOYLE PLZ becomes HOLLAND TUNNEL. 1.8 miles
19: Turn SLIGHT LEFT to stay on HOLLAND TUNNEL. 0.1 miles
20: HOLLAND TUNNEL becomes LAIGHT ST. <0.1 miles
21: Turn SLIGHT RIGHT onto CANAL ST. 0.3 miles
22: Turn LEFT onto CENTRE ST. 0.2 miles
23: CENTRE ST becomes CLEVELAND PL. <0.1 miles
24: Turn RIGHT onto KENMARE ST. 0.1 miles
25: End at New York, NY US
873.43 Miles 14 Hours 5 Minutes

If the speed limit were artificially raised ;) this may work for a 1 day drive and spend a few days in the city.

Where does one park their car when in NYC?

Stryke 06-30-2005 02:27 PM

We're not in Manhattan. We are in Staten Island, one of the five boroughs that make up NYC. Very suburban area. :)
