For those who have removed the fuel pump

I'm having the issue with not being able to fill my tank. The flap makes the click so it looks like I need to open up the fuel tank to tie back the fuel lines. The job looks pretty easy from reading the instructions on Pelican's site. But I don't really want to drain the tank using the fuel pump as I don't plan on replacing the pump and emptying the tank with it isn't good for the pump. So my question for those who've done this before is, how low does the fuel really need to be in order to get at the pump and twist it out? Is 1/4 tank low enough?
