red clip
any one have an experience with the red clip? thoughts? is it just a waste of money or does it work?
|
I use mine. And they're pretty cheap.
|
use it all the time. drop the top, put in the clip and i'm good to go. short trips out of the car mean i can still enable the motion sensor without having to raise the top.
|
Can the red clip help when someone throws garbage into your car?
|
For those who don't know....what is a "red clip"?

The red clip a plastic piece that gets put in the same place your roof hooks into when you close it. When you put the roof down, you put the red clip in it's place and it makes the cars sensors think that the roof is up and when you lock the car it engages the in-car sensors. It is a cheap for what it does. I use mine a little but I could live without it. For what it costs it is nice to have when you want it. Would look better in black. :D |
I've found it takes the security system some time to react. I can reach in real quick and pull something out and it won't go off.

Thanks for the Info.
Where did you say you live Clickman ? |

Otherwise known in Canada as Lotusland. ;) |
The Red Clip (PN# 986.504.986.00) was originally part of the Speedster Pkg.
It's function was to act as a Fail Safe to prevent the convertible top from being closed when the Speedster Humps were installed, which would have damaged the top mechanism and the Humps. It was serrendipitously discovered that with this clip in place, in addition to preventing closing the top (because it disabled the top motor circuit), that it also activated the interior IR motion sensors. The benefit of this was that with the clip in place, the top could be left open and the IR system offered some degree of protection from people reaching into the interior of the car. I say some protection because the system can be defeated by either swift or very slow motion which the system does not detect. Porsche intentionally defaulted the IR sensors to inactive with the top down in order to prevent false alarms when say a bug flew into the interior, or a leaf fell into it, etc. Cheers! |

to the point where I'm cleaning half a Coke off my leather instead of trying to figure out what I'm going to do to remedy the long, recently inflicted key-scratch down the side of the car... |
I use the red clip fairly often. Its cheap and easy to use and I hate putting the top up every time that I stop somewhere. Some people paint them black to blend into the windshield header but I like the red.
Even though the alarm motion sensor is activated, I still don't leave anything worth stealing out in plain sight. A little common sense can go a long way. |
Where can I find a "Red Clip"? Sounds like a good idea... :o
|
Got 'em at dealerships for a few bucks...they used to be given away for free a few years ago, by somebody or other. It's just a little piece of plastic, not much more involved or innovative than a big paperclip.

Slightly Off Topic
Speaking of vandalism. When on a trip with PCA in Germany a friend left his 911 Targa top off all day at a variety of stops. Nothing was ever touched. That night in Amsterdam he put the top back on before going into the restaurant for dinner. You guessed it. Someone broke the window and stole his radio.

Well, there ya go, my point exactly!!! Without delay, OP, run out and get yerself a red clip.
