STEERING WHEEL 987 on 986 ?? will it FIT?
 

Does anybody know if a 988/997/Caymann steering wheel will fit a 986? The main issue to me would seem to be that the spline pattern and diameter fits the steering shaft & that the wheel is about the same depth.

Pretty sure they are NOT compatible - especially b/c of the airbags. In fact, I don't think the wheels are even compatible b/w the 9x7.1 and 9x7.2 series.

Really? I did some research and It seems it really all boils down to the electric "match" (thats what where the electrical leads go.) that ignites the and starts the explosion/eruption of the bag. Looks like they're all the same tech; 12v, 1-3 amps.

Technology in front of "match" (sensors, computer manipulation of sensor signal, etc.) can be all over the map and the after the "match", (bag shape, nitrogen composition (fills the bag), positioning, etc.) can vary over the years and from marque to marque, but the electric match is the same tech. across the board as best I can tell.

If anyone knows different, pipe in. I'm also still not sure about the wheel depth and specs for the spline shaft.

Why? 9x7 steering wheels are so ugly.

Do you want the 987 wheel after looking at the one on the big boxster?

The big Boxster uses a 9x6 wheel.

Actually, my interior was getting kinda frumpy on every front but I really just set out for seats. I wound up picking up an entire, cherry 9x7 interior really cheap. That is all but the steering wheel.

Aside from wear, I've had the car about 10 yrs & I'm just tired of looking at the same old interior.

BTW: I know the 9X7 interior will take some jiggering here and there to fit but I'm clever that way (grin)

So you're going to try to get the dashboard from a 9x7 into your car? I'd like to see that! Gauges? Airbags?

The phony carbon fiber and sued is silly but I don't mind the rest. I've seen ones just like your decked out the same way(carbon fiber)...and worse.

I'm looking at a nice 3 spoke 986 wheel but it's got phony, shiny wood wrapped around it. I don't get who'd want to try to keep the car on the road on a hot day (with sweaty palms) on a wheel like that...make a lovely wall clock though.

Big Boxster = Carrera GT

It's the silver plastic all over the wheel and the big, round, highlighted airbag that I object to. The later 9x7 wheels have a smaller bag, but the hub is still a strange shape and there's too much "bling". The 9x6 wheels are soo much nicer looking.

There are only two negative things that I can say about the 2nd gen Boxster's styling. (1) The dash looks dumb when they remove the gauge cowl and (2) The sterring wheel is ugly.
