amberectomy - pliers only
 

Have any accomplished an amberectomy without the use of a soldering iron. I recall coming across someone who said they did it better with just pliers.

I suppose if the the lense has exposed edges this might be possible....

Any pointers on the process with or without the iron would be appreciated as a source for the proper silver coated amber bulbs...for the sides as well

I remember reading somewhere about performing the procedure with only pliers as well. I decided to do the procedure on my new, out-of-the-box Litronics about 6 years ago before installing them onto the car. I thought with a little patience and multiple lengths and shaped pliers I could remove the amber without heat. Evidently I wasn't patient enough. I don't remember how long I tried, but I eventually had to buy a soldering iron to get it done. Others have done it without heat, so I'm sure you can too. Sorry I couldn't offer something more positive.

I used an old soldering iron I had kept and a pair of very long needle nose pliers...didn't take very long, but the hot iron makes very quick work of the amber plastic, making it quite simple to pull out with the pliers. The amber plastic is quite tenacious and you risk damaging the headlamp by attacking it with pliers alone.

Purchased the silver/amber bulbs from a eBay seller...very nice quality.

I too used a soldering iron on my brand new clear headlights... Can tell you I was nervous as hell, but it really was a very easy job with the soldering iron.

Okay thanks guys...I will have to get hold of a thin soldering iron to break up the lenses. I was concerned with the hot plastic falling free on the inside and fusing to the inside of the housing...how is this avoided?

your best bet is to use the soldering iron. those plastic pieces are very flexible and you'll end up scratching the plastic lenses around it.. so use the iron to melt pieces away and a pair of super long noses to pull em out...

Okay so both tools at once as in grab hold and then melt so nothing gets dropped ?
