Texas Hill Country trip
We lived in both LaGrange and Brenham back in the 80's but it's been since then since I've been back.
How about my old Texas buddies tell me the best roads to see in the Hill Country! Maybe also the best places to stay (we like B&Bs) around Fredericksburg. Thanking my buds, in advance! Kurt Oh yeah - we're going the last week of March!! |

Take 16 to Leakey. There's a classic place to eat there. Find "Lost Maples" just before Leakey (RR187) take 83 to 39 back to 16 or longer head out 27 to RR479 to Kelly Branch Road to RR783 to Tivydale Rd / RR 2093. Day 2 take FM965 north, Check out Enchanted Rock take 16N into LLano, have BBQ there (classic BBQ joint google it) return on FM2323 or RR152 to 87 back to F'burg. There are some really great side roads off of those you can take. Just check out google maps. enjoy. Plan to come back in the fall for Boxstoberfest. |

Thanks for the road info, I'll print it and check out google maps and do a "rally sheet". I google earth back roads across the southeast, you can usually zoom in enough to make sure they are paved, then I do a directions sheet/s and laminate for protection and ease of reading "on the fly." |
@seningen - in what part of Austin are you?
I built a steel frame house in Bear Creek Estates in '85/6. Last project I did before heading back to Florida. |

Some low water crossings -- that will be dry as a bone now -- and lots of cattle guards. We did a rally at Boxstoberfest out there a couple years back -- I think I crossed 120+ of those cattle guards. All roads paved. I'm In Circle C -- not far from Bear Creek Estates -- Depending on how you are getting to F'burg -- you might head out 290W to FM1826 -- drive past your old haunts --- Hit the Salt Lick, then head out 150 to 12 to Wimberly then out Devil's Backbone (36?) over to Blanco area 281-- then over to F'Burg. Great driving and great scenery. M |
Thanks again seningen.
Sorry it took me so long to get back! |

The trip from Austin, through Wellsley and Blanco, over the F-Burg was a hoot and the trip up to Llano and back was pretty cool, too. We didn't get a chance to do the Leakey run, to the south. Coopers B-BQ in Llano was one of the highpoints of the trip! If you haven't done the Nimitz Museum in F-Burg, it's well worth the trip. US 87, north from Orange, up to Milam and across to Nacadoches was also a great ride, on our way to Brenham. Thanks again!! If you ever head to Florida or Georgia (or NOrthern ALabama) let me know, I can send you on some roller coasters! |

Very nice pics! Now is that a deer in the second pic about a quarter mile up on right?
|
yep. there were a few out... unfortunately they hang out right by the road...
gorgeous scenery this time of year. this was near New Braunfels, just outside of San Antonio btw. |
We were about a week, or so, early for the Bluebonnets!
We already have about a gazillion photos of them from living in Brenham for eight years! RR2323 from Llano back to Fredericksburg had so many deer, I finally just slowed down, to make sure. Wifey stopped counting at 20. The 987 Bi-Zenon lights are great, but they can't see what's over a rise! 2nd close call sealed the deal on slowing down. It was right at dusk, so they were on the move. BTW - We did 2861 miles on 112 gals of "ol' 93" ($436.00) and averaged 61 mph for trip. Gas was almost as much as the three nights we spent in two really nice B&Bs! In the spirit of "no links" Google "Commanders Place at Nevels Ranch" and "Far View B&B - Brenham, TX" Both were well worth the fare. |
