Headlight question
 
Hey all, I did a search already. But I'm not sure anyone has directly answered the question(s) I have.

First off, I'm looking at an 01 Box S. As I understand it, this car came with factory HIDs, correct? First partial question, are these the same as the Litronics I keep seeing people refer too?

Next, the amber signal indicator below the headlight housing is the thing that bugs me the most about the looks of a Box. Esp, on the silver car i'm looking at.

So, here's my actual question(s): what are my options to get rid of the amber?
1) Amberectomy....
a) How is this done?
2) OEM clear headlights
3) OEM Litronics

From my research, these are what I've found. Am I missing something? For option 2 or 3, where can I find these parts?

Sort of related question, where can I find a set of clear sidemarker?

No, not the same lights!

so all boxsters that have h.id. from the factory have autoleveling? when u turn ur car on at it the light goes up and down and goes back level.

If the headlamps need the amberectomy - then they're not Litronics. I was all ready to brandish the needle nose pliers, then found out I didn't have to?! It's like a rumor about a pervert moving into the neighborhood - you buy a gun before it even happens...

I don't have the code here at home, but look under the front hood for all the option codes - that will tell you real quick 'what you have'.

Alzo, Google (search here first..) amberectomy - there have been a number of people who made photo guides of the process.


...and I'm not sure if the std. lamps self-level?!

i know that the cayenne has autoleveling installed. can somebody confirm this?

its so expensive to purchase litronic headlights. i know i can save money without having to buy the litronic headlights by retrofitting a headlight projector preferrably bi-xenon from a bmw 7 series or nissan maximas and fabricate it into a halogen headamp so it would look custom looking if not even better! I have done it to my car already. its $15 dollars to make a harness and 300 for the projectors and ballast with ignitors.

if i can find a salvaged boxster headlight i'll go into it try it out.

It's also illegal because the halogen reflector won't create the proper light pattern, nor will you be likely to get the lamp leveling hardware to work properly.

In short, you won't be D.O.T. approved, you'll scatter glare at people around you, you'll have an improperly focused light beam with possible poor illumination, and you'll be vulnerable to getting a fix-it ticket.

If I recall correctly, the Cayenne and 911 uses sensors inside the SUV cabin to help determine level changes. Its not just the headlamps themselves.
Telling someone I know that he needed to put extra senors in his 911 to make his litronics work correctly.

it is not an H.I.D kit that puts those d2s bulbs from the xenon headlights that induce a LOT of glare hence those are illegal. What I am talking about is putting projectors in cut out the back end of the halogen housing reflector and align it. I am part of a forum that does those to our cars and in fact its more like a hobby for me. There are DOT approved projectors that fit within US SPECS. What is illegal is if you put a UK spec headlight for RHD and put it into a LHD. You will be pissing people off by blinding them on the street. I can show you my pics of how I did mine. Plus with a lil addition of bending the shields inside the projectors i get a nice blue and purple hue like the maximas. :dance:

When I said I do retrofits I make sure the light doesn't bleed out from the projector and on to the halogen reflector. I can either black them out and put a shroud around the projector or just toss the reflector and redesign the housing. Words don't mean justice until i post pics.

as for auto leveling, I know how the system works. You put the sensors on your A-arms so when the computer knows theres a load it does its precheck sensors to figure out where the load is. Ex; you got a 300 lb fat dude on the passenger and ur lights are tilted to the right. what those lights do is just align themselves together.

there is no glare from these pics. and all i see are my turn signals that are on the wall. I'll show you what a glare pic looks like once I find it.

Hence, a NICE cutoff line should look like the 2nd to the last pic. It has to be all aligned and no light above the cutoff line. This is how an OEM beam pattern should look like and its not and H.I.D. aftermarket kit or Sylvania superstars. I took the projectors off from an E39 BMW 5 series 2002 projector and ballast and fabricated it into my car and can see a whole lot better. Im just offering a CHEAPER solution than purchasing litronic headlights from porsche. its 1/3 of what u would pay in full. HAPPY VIEWING

Found the pics from my forum! yay Here is 101 tuturiol on the JOY of HID. Glare is the most unwanted thing in a HID setup and we avoid it at minimal cost. Some people think doing retrofits are crappy aftermarket BLUE bulbs which create a lot of glare. People with Litronic headlights have their bulbs colorshift over time. When I had my pair of bulbs it was pure yellow and now its bluish white. Over the course of time the output will turn more to bluish and still not create glarelike those 6000k or 8000k kelvin kits. OEM standards are 4100K to 5000K sunlight equivalent.. Read and heed.
HID TUTORIAL:

HID kits are illegal due to the glare that they cause. Glare is Light that is emitted in a Uncontrollable path. When light is traveling in a uncontrollable path it can hit other vehicle operators affecting there vision because of the High amount of uncontrollable light that is being Emitted from a HID kit in a standard Halogen housing. If you have ever turned a flashlight on right in front of your face while it is dark out, that is the same feeling that the other drivers on the road experience from a standard HID kit.

OEM Vehicles such as Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Lexus are all equipped with HID or Xenon Headlights. Some use reflector housing’s without projectors. Others use HID projectors.

The Lexus IS300 is a Prime Example of a HID reflector housing. It does not use a Projector. It uses a Specially designed Reflector housing that is meant to use HID. This does not create the Super sharp cutoff. But it does control where the light is being Emitted.

Other vehicles such as the Honda S2000 Use HID projectors, These Projectors are meant to use HID. They are Specially Designed and have been tested Hundreds of times to get the right projection of light while maintaining a Good Cutoff.

and since i have done this my dispersion on the ground fills up two lanes on the highway if not 3 plus the median area and compared to using my old halogen bulbs where the output on the ground is poor which probably fills just ur lane and partially the other two (if ur driving in the middle)

To date, NHTSA has investigated 24 HID conversion kit suppliers; all investigations have resulted in recalls or termination of sales.
