Should I Buy another Boxster

I know this will be a personal decision, but...................should I buy a new 2011 Boxster S and trade-in my 2007 Boxster S? Options between the two are comparable. Main reason for trade is that one will have an expired warranty, the other will have a 4-year warranty.

I currently have a 2007 Boxster S. paid-off.
44,000 miles (warranty about to expire) - main reason for considering selling
PASM
Sports Chrono
Automatic - Tiptronic
Bose
CD-Changer
Power seats
Sports wheel
and some other minor options.

I paid $66K. Free title. Trade-in should be about $30K.

A 2011 Boxster S (w/taxes) will run approx. $72K. Less the $30K expected trade-in will result as a $40K out-of-pocket.

Am I gaining anything by trading to the new model (w/new warranty), or should I just keep my current vehicle and hope there are no major repair requirements that will come up? What is the Boxster's reliability after 50K miles?

If I was in your position I would go for the Boxster Spyder. You propably won't keep your next car either when warranty expires and the Spyder will definitely hold its value better. Plus it's a better driver's car.

Why pay $40k just for jumping half a generation? Wait until 2012 model is released at the very least to see what Porsche will come up with.

If you have the money then go right ahead but just saving you from banging your head against the wall if the all-new 2012 model turns out to be amazing.

I would sell your current one,

go backwards and buy a low mileage 03/04 S
Find a good independent.
do the IMSR, change the water pump, and do some other
general maintenance

Now you have a more reliable car than your 07 (IMS wise)
and probably have $10K or more in your pocket to cover
any general maintenance AND you've got only $20k of depreciation
to worry about.

It won't be an '11, but still a pretty darn good (and reasonably priced) Porsche!

I agree with Ekam. Trading your '07 for a 2011 would be like moving everything from one side of the house to the other . What's the real difference between the two vehicles, other than the huge expense of trading up ? I would wait to see what iteration of the boxster 2012 brings. Or better yet, I would buy a low mileage, pristine 360 Modena ! You're probably into the same kind of money by purchasing a 2011-12 boxster.

Keep driving what you have...set aside some money and self insure your car warranty wise yourself.

Most people with the kind of money you have who buy a boxster buy it to drive it not to set off any "cockometers" as Jeremy Clarkson would say. So if you are into it for the thrill of driving than do the above and really enjoy driving that permagrin machine IMS worry free. Than you can also send me and Seningen a little from all the dough you have left to help us with our porsche funds.

Sorry but I really hate the american attitude of throw-away the old (in cars that is usually only 3-4 years) and consume the new. Take something old and give it new life. Just don't go as far as Randall did. Sorry Randall.

I've been enjoying my 10 year old S as a weekend toy for the last 4 years. Recently I gave my old commuter car to my newly minted teenage driver and the Boxster became my daily driver. Now I get to have fun driving the car every day. It's much dirtier than it used to be, but puts an equally big smile on my face. I'm going to drive it until something major sidelines it. Just passed 109K miles last week (but only 40K on engine #2).

I agree, I've only bought one new car, of the 25 or so cars I've owned and have been driving my 74 Bronco for almost 18 yrs now. But the original poster seems very concerned about warranty (maybe not a guy that wants to deal with fixing an older car?) and if he has the money, might as well go for a new car, support Porsche in a way alot of us can't, and in a few years it could be a nice used car for one of us to buy!

in your pocket why the heck are you worried about a warranty? You could blow the engine the day after the warranty runs out and replace it with a more powerful and more reliable one and still have $10-15k in your pocket.

Or you could ship it to Jake tomorrow and he'd do the 6 or 8 most important things to increase its long term reliability prospects and you'd still have $30k left in your pocket.

And you'd not be driving a new car whose new features may hide defects we'll only know about in 5 years. Nor paying insurance on it. Or facing its initial-owner depreciation.

It is totally your choice.

Mike Focke brings up a very good point....
The OP has already lost $36,000 since 2007 (car cost $66k, expected trade $30k) and in 3 years time he will lose another bundle (say another $25k when / if he trades up to the 2014 model. Thats a lot of money to give away...

On the other hand, his existing 2007 S fitted with a Raby 3.6 litre engine complete with all the upgrades for around $16/18k and the Flat6 warranty would still look attractive $$ wise.
And it would fly too - over 300 hp would make my smile even wider. I think every time I opened the taps, I would forget the upgrade costs....

How bout another option?

Have you thought about a leftover 2010? With a willingness to travel and the ability to negotiate, you can probably get a dealer to knock at least $12K off a 2010. But if you go this route, be sure to clear up how long the factory warranty lasts. There's been debate here on the forum that the warranty clock may have already started on a leftover. But there are plenty of 2010s out there and dealers will be blowing them out before year end. And the chase is half the fun.

hold on to your car ! they will pork you hard on the trade in value , there is suppose to be a new boxster coming along soon also a 4 banger too. hanging on to your 07 for a year or so out of warranty should be ok. unless you really want that sweet PDK tranny !

If I had that kinda cash to drop on a fun, weekend car, it would be the 360 without question.

Or, check out a Lotus Exige, very affordable used with <30k miles, Toyota motors, and fun as HELL to drive!!
