muffler fitment

hey all, i believe there is a rattling noise in my 02 exhaust system. however, i can't seem to locate the exact location. i am just going to start to replace parts, starting at the muffler. does anyone know what years will fit onto 02? i have an opportunity to put a 98 muffler on and believe it will fit. however, i also have the opportunity to put on 05 s-muffler for same price. but i was told by local dealer this will not fit. is that true? any help would be appreciated. or anyone have a muffler, please let me know. thanks.

If you look at the way the after market manufacturers break down fitment, I'd say it's unlikely the 98 muffler would fit. If you are doing this merely to solve a rattle, why not check all the heat shields surrounding the cats first?

thanks. i have checked everything else. ie..all heat shields and used a mallet and knocked around. can't seem to reproduce at idle, but only at 2-3k rpms. very frustrating.

but thanks for your thoughts.

i was told by the local dealer that 98-2004 were the same muffler.

check the connecting pipes entering the ends of the muffler. Mine rattled even though the clamps were tight.

my heat shields have been rattling since i took ownership of the car 3 years ago.. been under it so many times tapping about trying to find where exactly the rattle at low revs was coming from..

.. today i was at lakeside engineering having a coolant flush and s/steel brake lines put in and Max made same comment about the exhaust rattle at which point i mentioned ive been trying find the rattle..

sensors he said, grabbed a spanner.. 10 seconds later, all done.. exhaust is rattle free !

go figure !

fyi, there is i fellow on this board (username 'Paul') who has a cayman (ie 987) exhaust sytem on his 986 - headers, mid pipes, exhaust. apparently a bolt-on application; the only fabrication required was the extension of 02 sensors. if you can get a 987 exhasut on your car i say go for it, as concensus seems to be that the 987 has a better 'sound' that 986.

thanks all.

good stuff. regarding 987, i was told it wouldn't fit. any one else attempted this? putting a 987 muffler on a 986 car? 2005 into 2002.

I have a 98 stock muffler I'm willing to get out of my garage for cheap plus shipping if you decide to go that route. 14k miles on part.

narrowed my rattle down to loose baffles in the muffler.

ordered and waiting for my NHP muffler to show up...
