Buying 04 Boxster

Hi all, I'm a newbie to this forum. I've never owned a Porsche but always wanted one. I found a pretty good deal, I think, at a local dealership for an '04 base model with 21K mi. It has the 18" 5 spoke wheels, clear bra, short shifter, and lowered springs (H&Rs I think). The dealer is asking $33K. The issues I'm concerned about is the high mileage for a 1 year old car and it was also a loaner car for the first 6 months of it's life. The service manager was the second owner for the rest of the mileage so I'm sure the upgrades were done correctly at the dealership. Carfax shows a clean history.

What do you guys think? Is it too risky to buy a former loaner car? Do you think the price is too high for this mileage and history? Thank you for your feedback.

You missed the tech session for the new Boxster at Stevens Creek Porsche last month. Lots of Boxster owners. There is another tech session this Saturday in Sunnyvale. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=4742

I'd never buy a loaner car. Or a lease return for that matter.

If buying used, I look for enthusiasts with meticulous records. There's way too many people out there jumping speed bumps with their car like it's no big deal. I can't even imagine how they'd drive a loaner.

"I'd never buy a loaner car. Or a le"ase return for that matter."

Actually, many lease cars are pristine, some are not. Just like "owned" cars.

I would tend to stay away from loaners myself.

Look elsewhere.

thanks for the advise guys. i think i'll take a look at some new 04s still sitting in dealer lots. i heard deals as good as $20K under msrp for remaining 04s. haven't ran across any dealers in the bay area giving that type of discount. has anyone come across such deals?

Brucelee 05-10-2005 05:50 AM

No, around here you will find deals at around the dealer's invoice for brand new ones. That is certainly not $20K under MSRP and I suggest some of those reports are bogus.

Good luck!

$20K off would be an insane deal. I don't think you'll find that deal. I think Carlsen has a lot of '04s left. Not sure about Stevens Creeak. Claridges doesn't look like they have too many.

i got 4200 off my 2004 this past november. Not the greatest deal, but at the time it was a good deal.

So far the dealers are giving $10K off for 04s. So basically 04 'S' = 05 base. which one would you guys go for?

Brucelee 05-11-2005 05:51 AM

Cosmetically, I think the 05 is a step backward for the Box yet I still like it.

Performance wise, the S is still a bit quicker but at this point, so I think the whole issue comes down to what do you like?

Drive them both several times and choose.

Good luck.
