noisy aircon compressor
 

Hi All, hope you all well. I have a 2001 box S and the compressor is working but sounds very whiney. Will it pack up soon? how can I cure it without replacement?

Have you recharged with refrigerant?
If so, it could have leaked compressor oil as well as refrigerant, but only refrigerant was replenished.
Sometimes they just go bad and need to be replaced.
You can find one for very cheap ($50-$75).
Just contact the Boxster Spec Racers. They sell all that unnecessary stuff.

its only making the noise with the a/c on right ? does it blow good and cold air ?if its the compressor you should fix before it freezes up

HI Ex tanker, thanks for that. Yes, air is cold. Will compressor just stop then do you think? I don't run in that much but with colder weather coming up will need to dry car out when it mists.

i dont know if your compressor is bad or if its going bad BUT some times before they seize up and break the belt they will put fine metal particals in the system which have to be cleaned out or you will ruin your brand new compressor

Is replacing the compressor a DIY or a dealer job?

I had my compressor replaced when it started making a thrumming noise. The stealership charged the extended warranty $1800 Canadian for parts and labour.

Interestingly, in my case, the noise didn't go away at that point. They fiddled with the other bearings on the main belt, didn't help, and then just when they had ordered a 2nd compressor the noise went away. Go figure.
