Painted bumperettes
 

I'm going to paint the rear bumperettes on my 01 S. My question is to the folks that have done this already.

They are slightly textured, so did you paint over the texture or did you make them smooth first,(i.e. sanding them smooth or applying a filler then sanding smooth)

Is there a DIY thread for painting the bumperettes?
Anyone have any recommendations on what kind of primer to use on the plastic before applying paint?
Do you clear coat after painting?
Any suppliers of paint recommendations?

I didn't sand mine and they look fine, you have to get up close to see the texture and it doesn't bother me. The ones that now come painted on P cars are smooth so the choice is yours. You can sand them down as suggested. I had a pro paint mine and the color match is good.

The problem with using a filler is that they are rubber & the filler is prone to cracking off.
I sanded them smooth, then laid down a couple coats of flexible primer followed by color & clearcoat from www.paintscratch.com.

Thanks for the responses guys. Just a FYI, I manage an auto body supply store. There are flexible products made for bumpers like Evercoat 411. It's a flexible polyester glazing putty.

I can put a thin coat on, then sand smooth, prime with a urethane primer, sand again then paint and clear.

I'll be shooting BASF Diamont base and using whatever clear I have left from my last job.

Then I'll start on the nose and fill in the license plate holes and repaint up front.

I've already done a little touch up around the left tail light and the color match with the Diamont is spot on.

First thing is a soap and water wash, followed by a solvent wipe (pre-kleeno).

I don't recommend spray can primer unless it's also an adhesion promoter, like Bulldog.

Yes, clear coat for sure.

Any paint supplier will work, just make sure they have a system that can check for variations on your color.

Some Honda colors now have up to 18 different formulas for the same paint code.
