Excellence IMS article part II: check your oil filter!

Part two of the July Excellence article on the IMS upgrade by this forum's sponsor (Flat6) is a MUST read. There's pretty technical explanation on how to extract the old IMS and install the new aftermarket unit for those of you inclined to take a whack at it yourselves or if you wish to know how your indy will do it.

And something I hadn't seen before, pulling apart (as in cutting it open) the oil filter and what to look for, or should I say what you should NOT be seeing. Some of you who bought your Boxsters without service records should definintely check this...and I wouldn't wait until the next oil change to do it either. If you're sitting on a time bomb, bumping up your next oil change seems well worth it to see what's going on down there.

Garage
Here, http://www.excellence-mag.com/

Or just go to a Borders book store. They usually have them in store.

This should be a standard test before buying all Boxster and Carreras...
But it could be misleading if the seller changes the oil right before putting it up for sale. And that's if they'll let you cut it open in the first place.

I guess it makes sense to hold onto all your old filters from the last year or take to take pictures after the autopsy at least. That would be a good way of monitoring as the mileage goes up.

I stopped Excellence last year can anyone elaborate on what to look for in the filter? I put a dollar store velcro dog collar and the strongest flat magnets I could find on the exterior case of the filter holder, whether it does any good is another matter.

dude you should buy this article and keep it in the Boxster library for reference.
Barnes & Noble already has it near me.

but I'll help you out. Any debris bigger around .05's is a red flag.

I'll be looking for that issue for sure, every year or two I bail on "Excellence" , I find it gets repetative and fawns all over the 911 like so many other Porsche publications.
