BMW inline-6 engines have issues too

Yeh, but it seems that 1) it doesn't cause catastrophic engine failure and need of an entirely new engine replacement, and 2) BMW has redesigned the High Pressure Fuel Pump, and voluntarily extended the warranty on the part to 120k miles and 10 yrs, whichever comes first. Full replacement at no cost to owners regardless if they sell the car to someone else. That's def NOT what Porsche offers.

A failing fuel pump won't grenade an engine (most of the time).

True, but apparently I read that people are on their 4th fuel pump and BMW arguably still haven't got a real fix for it yet. That's what I know for my 5 min research.

At least that's their 4th free replacement fuel pump, and not their 4th engine.

I have a BMW X3 and my Boxster and I must say that BMW's service quality and commitment to customer satisfaction beats Porsche hands down

I ditched my BMW 335 for the Boxster. The high pressure fuel pump is a big issue. A flaw that is likely to leave you stranded. But give BMW credit for recognizing the issue, extending the warranty on the flawed part and re-designing the engine (they moved to a different design after only 2/3 years). No doubt these moves were necessitated by the line of dead 335's waiting for their new HPFP to come in...
BMW dealers are rated by BMW USA by how well their customers "grade" them on the post service survey. I found it absolutely obnoxious to be pressured into giving the dealers high grades for service. Frankly, I didn't even like the constant follow-up calls. That's one of the reasons I'm done with BMW. I'm comfortable with an out of warranty Boxster (now serviced by a local Indy) as my daily driver -- but I wouldn't touch an out of warranty BMW 335. |
Do the new DFI engines in 2010 Porsches have a similar High Pressure Fuel Pump?

older BMW's 2000-2006's had AOS's that would hydrolock the engine and cause catostrophic failures from bent rods to cracked heads.

I sold my Bimmer at 38k flawless miles...guess I was lucky...bought an '88 911 since I wasn't needing a "business" car anymore.
