Why is climate control always on?

Question:

I have been updating a 97 base that I bought a few months ago. Thanks to many of you, I am almost finished. One item that baffles me, however, is that the climate control always comes on when I first start the car even though, as the weather is nice this time of year in Virginia, I always cut it off and leave it off while driving. I have never seen a car, especially a convertible, that assumes that you always want the climate control system in the "on" position. A minor issue in the grand scheme of things to be sure, but I thought I would ask the group anyway.

Thanks.

I have a '97 and what you see is how it works. Mine does the same thing. Just normal!

It's a pain and a very poorly thought out deployment..

Hey thanks guys. I guess normal is "normal." Thanks again.

mine doesn't do this. but my 01 BMW did, annoying as hell...

recirculation

what drives me nuts is when I turn on recirculation and it always turns on the A/C. I'm sure it's so it doesn't fog up but when I turn off A/C with recirc on it turns A/C back on after several minutes. Talk abut annoying!

IIRC, I leave my fan and temp on the lowest setting; don't even notice it's on. Am I missing something here?

I read in the owners manual that the climate control if set to auto, will run the A/C all the time unless it is below freezing outside.

I simply turn off the A/C manually and it stays off until I push the auto button again. I've never had it come back on automatically even over a period of days or weeks. Perhaps different years behave differently.

Also, I often manually turn the fan down all the way until the climate control turn all the way off. No need for climate control when the top is down.

+1

Drives me nuts. I just hit the down arrow button for the fan until it goes off every time I start it. I had a Z4 before this car and it didn't do that. Hummmm???

It's a convertible. Convertibles are notorious for for small leaks, high humidity in the cockpit, etc.

Porsche defaults the climate control to ON so the demister (along with AC for a source of 'dry' air) can prevent windscreen fogging and also to dry out the carpet, ductwork, etc. of any moisture to inhibit mold and mildew growth (again a common thing in convertibles).

LIOLWT - Live it... Or Live With It !

Cheers!

Porsche must believe that forcing the compressor to run at least once every start, they are preventing problems with the system.

If it were "off" for an extended period of time, leaks, bearing problems , etc may occur. IMHO

Climate control always comes on when I first start the car.

That's why is called Climate Control. In the auto mode it will either cool or heat your car, just like your house. Also, I have owned convertibles for over 40 Years. They can smell a bit with hot & humid climates. I use to drive my Corvette in the winter with the top down and the heat blowing. Summers where just the opposite.

Drove my car today...how nice to finally get it out of the garage. I looked and my climate control is set in the manual mode; temp reading lo and fan on minimum...no irritating issues upon start up. I've never left the controls on automatic as long as I've owned the car.
