Tire rotation, can wheels be rotated side to side?

While most Boxster high performance tires are unidirectional, Bridgestone has a tire (Potenza RE760 Sport) that can be rotated side to side. On a 97 base with 16 inch wheels, can the entire wheel/tire be rotated from side to side, or would the tires need to be dismounted first? In other words, on my old corvette, the wheels were unidirectional as were the tires.

Thanks.

Go Ahead, Swap 'Em

As you noted, unidirectional tires on a car with different size front and rear tires can't be rotated. On our Boxsters it's okay to swap 'em left to right as long as they're not unidirectional. I've done it for years.

Unless they're not aligned right, there isn't much benefit to just swapping the rear wheels. The camper (and slight toe) wears the inside of the tire, both right and left. If you can unmount the tires and turn them around, so the outside of the tire was the inside, you'll get more life.

For what it's worth, a cousin's father in law is retired senior management from Michelin and worked his way up. I asked him about this once, his contention? If the car is aligned correctly and all other suspension components in good order there is no benefit from the rotation.
