Crisis avoided!

So, I was investigating a small rattle near the exhaust today, and noticed a bolt showing about 1/4 inch thread. Well, long story short all 8 of the drive shaft bolts (both sides) were loose- 3 of which weren't threaded in at all. My guess is when the boots were replaced the mechanics failed to torque these bolts. I'm lucky my investigation was so successful and besides a nice ring of grease inside the fender, no damage!

Whew!

It may recur. For the last however many miles since the boots were replaced, every time you changed speed the cv bolts rocked back and forth in their bores. This may have produced wear in the threads making it more likely for them to come loose again. If me, I'd use blue loc-tite, schnorr washers or wave washers, and torque to proper value. Maybe even drill and wire the bolt heads.

this is a good point. I have thought about using loc tite. I am going to keep a close eye on it and if they keep coming loose, act accordingly!

Thanks!

Loctite is your friend, when I did my cv boots this last weekend I made damned sure the threads were clean and blue loctite was applied. I think a wire might be overkill but it depends on you intended purpose.
