Shifting is harder and harder... Front mount?
Hi,
I noticed that it's gettign harder and harder to shift into lower gears (downshifting to 1st takes good 5-10 sec of trying) Can failed front engine mount be responsible for that? I know it's time to change my FE mount, car has 68k miles and I do have vibrations at 3krpm... I just wonder if something else could be causing lower gear shifting stiffness... 1st to 2nd.. is harder but doable.. downshifting to 1st... I'd rather drive <1K RPM in 2nd gear then try to down shift If I'm stopped everything is smooth, it's also smoother at very low speeds Thanks Sasha |
Sounds like a clutch more than an engine mount, although the mount could be aggravating the situation. Do a search and you'll find some threads on how to test your clutch.

That's what I thought also in the beginning.. but after doing clutch tests it seems ok
I don't get any slipping in high gears and if car is not moving (or moving very slowly) shifting is ok.. Thanks Sasha |
Google Pedro's Garage. He has good info on front engine mount. I'd expect a bad clutch to slip in higher gears from low rpm.

Do the front engine mount and see if it helps. It's a cheap part (it's a 987 part for all Boxsters now) and procedure should only be 2 hours labour. It will fix your 3100 vibration, give more immediate throttle response, and should improve shifting - if shifting still needs some work, at least you've done the mount and taken that out of the equation.
