Crazy idea...
 

I do not like the laborious method it takes to jack up the Boxster. The car stock is too low for my good floor jack and I have to use a smaller floor jack to get it up high enough to then use the other one to get it high enough to get jack stands under the car.

I am planning on lowering it in the future and that will make the situation even worse.

I was wondering if you guys think it would be practical to install those air powered jacks that are used in racing.

That depends, can this jack raise the car high enough for stands to be placed without the use of another jack or are you simplifying the 2 jack method? Same one I use..

If it raises the car high enough and you can locate it without creating problems in the related area, I'd go for that center support where Bentley suggests you jack it up..

I believe they will raise the car by eight inches. Not quite full work height but enough to do tire changes, work on the suspension, easily get it on a shop lift and a lot of other convenient things.

Once my car is lowered I will have to jack it on each side to get a shop lift under it.

Or used a bunch of staggered 2X8 or 2X10 pieces to stair-step the car up the necessary space.

IMHO, the air jacks are a silly idea - waaay too much hassle to install for waaaay too little benefit. They will raise the car 8" Minus whatever height above ground they start at. In Racing use, all these things need to do is raise the car an inch or two to clear the tire for changes. Plus, they are not reliable to crawl under at all.

fine idea if cost is no object. a single inboard air jack unit usually runs about $450
I guess you would need at least three if not four.

Then there is the matter of engineering them into location in the frame that can handle the load, and have the internal clearance...

I have always thought that some kind of airbag lift system would be handy, and easily implemented. But it would have to raise the car high enough to get jack stands under it. Trying to jack the car up when it is less than two feet from a wall or another car is not fun.

The coolest on vehicle lift I have seen is on the Bowler Nemisis.

Granted it is an offroad racer but what a great idea.

Just to dovetail onto my pal lil b's point, I don't know if he would agree but IMO, there is no jack safe enough for me to lay under without safety stands. I have a mechanic friend who was almost crushed doing that and as a professional he had the best @#$% jack money can get, a stand can't leak.


PS With the spoiler lip, I scrape occasionally despite my persistent efforts to be exceptionally careful, luckily, nothing has left a mark. Since I'm always crawling in or out of parking place with inclines on the way in, I could never imagine the Box any lower. Where I live you would tear it up for certain.

I dropped a Discovery off a high lift onto the brakes once, I NEVER work on a vehicle without jack stands in place. With my land rovers the clearance is 11" under the diffs so I don't have to jack anything to work under them but the Boxsters scare the hell out of me because my head will not fit under it in any position unless the car is raised.

I understand, I should have photographed mine well I was working on it. Talk about overkill, I think I had five or six stands under it...

How about spending $5 and picking up a couple 2x4s and driving onto them? Then you should be able to clear your floor jack.

I'd rather use two jacks than play the drive on 2x4 game...

I just went to home depot in the Falls and picked up some scrap lumber (maybe only an inch or 2 high max) for abour $3 that I could drive the car onto to start ... they're really not bad and it helps me to get the jack underneath.

Ummmm. Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to just buy a new floor jack that will fit under the car without hassle? Sounds like you are trying to solve a simple problem with a complex and expensive solution.

$1800? **************** that's all? I just spent twice that on 02 sensors, starter, alternator, clutch, rms, ims upgrade, coolant flush, mylanta, etc.

I love the looks of that lift, not to find the fly poop in the pepper but that lift looks like it would block a lot of access, unless of course you bought high stands for it, that would rule!!

Someday... If I get one I would certainly feel better about tackling a clutch job instead of laying down with just enough room to work.
