Clutch master cylinder - how many hours to replace?

Hi there,

I got my clutch replaced in December after a traffic light race (stupid I know!) fried it. The guys who did the clutch job said that my clutch master cylinder should be replaced at the next service. Since then the same clutch symptoms as before my replacement have returned - little resistance on pedal when releasing clutch, more difficult to engage some gears (especially second). When I called the mechanic he said it must be the master clutch cylinder...

1- Does this sound like its the clutch master cylinder?
2- How long should it take for them to change it?

Thanks,

Mark

It could be your master cylinder - though they are generally reliable.
It could also be your slave cylinder, which is mounted next to the gearbox.
But before changing anything, I would try bleeding the clutch hydraulic fluid - if you have air in the system, it make the pedal mushy & the gears difficult to select.
Plus its a lot cheaper and easier.......

Champ:

Here is a photo showing the location of the clutch slave cylinder on the driver's side of the transmission, with the red arrow pointing to the bleed valve:

+1 on bleeding the system. at 30k miles I thought my clutch was gone however somehow air got into the system and gave the clutch a funny feel. After bleeding the system it has been perfect. Now have 67k miles
