bike rack
hello fellow boxxters...
i am in the market for a bike rack for my 00 boxster. i was wondering if anyone can recommend a very good/reliable bike rack model? I would need to carry 2 bikes, a road and mountain bike Thanks in advance, Fab |
I know of two options:
The Porsche RTS (a fancy skeletal roof rack), which I've seen on eBay for around $400. http://www.rahul.net/dennisp/boxster/DSCN17813.jpg The other is the Willwood system, which gives you a rear hitch: http://www.willwoodsystem.com/ http://www.willwoodsystem.com/images/rack.side.jpg Has anybody here used the Willwood system? It looks decent enough, but I'm not totally sold on the durability aspect. Specifically the single hidden receiver hitch behind the rear plate setup. Then again, with the RTS, you have a muddy bike sitting over your head. I'm not sure which I'd prefer. |
I've used the bird bike rack for a few seasons now. It actually works real well (meaning its pretty easy to use and so far I haven't damaged to the car/paint or bike). The system works by mounting pipes to the chassis of the car. Then the rack is inserted in the pipes and attached with straps when you want to use it. I would describe it as a "custom" bike rack that is nicely designed specifically for the Boxster.
Here is a link to a thread. I posted some pictures. http://www.986forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13825 I bought mine used from e-bay. I forget what I paid, but maybe $250? Well worth it. http://www.birdautomotive.com/Bike%20Rack%20Boxster.htm |
I am very happy with durability of my Willwood rack although I can not comment on the single hitch as mine is the original double receiver mount. I saw a Cayman with the single hitch pulling a trailer of track tires. It looked like a good system. Call Will; I'm sure he would be happy to answer your questions.

I had the bird rack. the owner of the company was nice enough to install it on my car as a test. unfortunately the rack was damaged in a parking lot incident. bastard took off while i was picking up dry cleaning.
Saris makes a really cool bike holder but it requires a single post hitch. |
