call me stupid, but what does that have to do with the headlights??

According to the forum, it had more to do with placement than the quality or lack of quality of the ebay hid's

it seems as if there is a connection to aftermarket HIDs affecting the ecu and making the rack go ape****************.

The problem was that the gentleman mounted the ballast right onto his Lexus' ECU.
The high voltage created by the ballast/ transformer can generate an electromagnetic field that can affect the ECU.
It's not just aftermarket ballasts that do that. They all do, so it's important where they are placed.
I install these (aftermarket HID and LED DRLs) on a regular basis and have never had an issue.

I recommend installing the ballasts and transformer right onto the headlight assembly.
It is far from any of the sensitive electronic components and also allows for easy removal of the headlight.
