Static noise/hiss when playing CD's CDR23

Hi all

Ironically here I am looking at upgrading the speakers in my car when yesterday the CD ( slot loaded ) started to crackle and hiss like a badly tuned radio station. I ejected the CD and the standard radio played fine so its not a loose speaker connection, re-inserted the CD and again lots of hiss.

Does that mean the head unit is now on its way out?
