'98 Boxster ignition sw./starter issues

My '98 Boxster is having starting problems - turn the key, accessories come on but starter won't engage. Pull the key, try again, repeat a few times and finally it will start.

It has been doing this from time to time in the past, but usually pulling the key, turning it over and trying again fixed the problem. Starting yesterday, though, it's doing it every time and takes more and more attempts to start.

I have now noticed, however, that depressing the clutch a couple of times before trying again helps.

Ignition switch assembly was replaced by Porsche dealership 1 yr ago.

Any ideas what might be the cause of this issue, anyone?

You say that depressing the clutch a couple times help. Sounds like the micro switch on the clutch. Not sure where it is, but it wouldn't allow you to start without seeing the clutch pressed.

If you lay on your back under the pedals and look at the pedal arms you will see small plastic, plunger actuated, micro-switches. If the switch plunger is sticking or not extending that could be the issue. If you carefully remove the switch it's somewhat adjustable, you might try a tiny amount of lube first or if you confirm it's the switch then just replace it. It's an inexpensive part and other than the body position an easy repair.

in a pinch, you can bypass the clutch micro-switch by shorting it using a jump wire between the connectors on the rear. Just make sure you still have the clutch engaged or the car in neutral when you go to start it. ;)

In a pinch?
That's been one of my permanent hacks since I bought the car.
It's very useful when tinkering, to just reach in through the open window and start her up.
Also, when I live in MO, in the winter, when it was below zero, I'd start the car without having to sit on the cold, cold seats.
Happy Boxstering,
Pedro

A pinch for those who have not already done the permanent hack

Heard your 'long' winter is now over. Must have been tough to keep the top up for a few days in January :ah:

:D

I know this is kind of an old post but just trying. I have the same exact issue (have to turn the ignition key multiple times to start). Not a battery problem. It does not even crank. The frequency is now increasing. How did you resolve your issue? Do remember? Thanks much.

replace the switch, very common problem
