Carrera rear bumper for Boxster??
Is there a Carrera rear bumper that will bolt onto a 99 986 that will give me the dual exhaust outlets or is this a custom aftermarket piece? Any info would be great, I would like to have the dual exhaust outlet configuration. If I can get the bumper I will begin working on the muffler problem. Bill

Completely different animal...only some of the fronts are interchangeable. If that's your desire, you'd need to go aftermarket or possess some very good fabrication skills.

The 986 and 966 are only similar from the front seats forward, the back end is completely different so you cannot just bolt on a 996 rear bumper. I am not aware of any aftermarket Boxster bumpers with dual exhaust outlets on the sides, so it would have to be custom.

outlets exit via the rear bumper fascia. Check out Kirk' s boxster. |
a decent body shop would be able to plastic weld the center cut out and cut side outlets for you
could get a used bumper incase you change your mind later on |
I'm curious about your ideas on the exhaust. I'm having a hard time visualizing how you plan to do this, assuming you're planning a streetable version with cats and a muffler.
I haven't actually seen a 911's exhaust in the car, but have seen pics of the pieces. Doesn't it exit the header towards the front of the engine (since the motor is behind of the trans) and then loops back towards the rear bumper? This provides space for the cats and muffler and allows for the dual exhaust. You won't be able to copy that configuration since you've got axles moving up and down in the Box to contend with. Another option would be to have a custom single muffler designed to sit in the center rather than the current set up of a muffler on each side. Each bank would enter on the side as well as the outlets exiting on the sides. But I can't see this set up being more efficient than the current version, so you could end up choking your engine and losing HP. A final option would be to drop the cats and design a muffler in it's place. This would allow for a dual exhaust. Removing the cats will produce CELs. And it may not pass if your state does inspections that require clean exhausts. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on executing the exhaust aspect of the project. |
