2003 Boxster s blown worth?

How much is a 2003 boxster s worth with a blown engine. I am thinking about flipping this car but I need to know the value. Any help is appreciated.

I also blew the engine on my 2003 Boxster S 2 weeks ago. Was sitting at a light and and noticed a huge amount of smoke coming from my exhaust. By the time I was able to pull over, the engine was whining then shut down with smoke pouring out. Not sure what to do. May be able to get 8K for it as is. Not worth putting new engine. Does anyone think it is worth going after Porsche?

What do you mean go after them? The engine definitely has some design flaws, but I don't think they will do anything. Especially with an 8 year old car

It's going to depend A LOT on your local market, but just for comparison, I bought a local 2000 S with a bad motor and 73,000 mi. and a few small interior issues for $3200 and I felt like both parties got a fair deal.

Another example... A customer of mine was able to buy a 1999 base with a questionable motor and some minor interior issues for $2500. Unfortunately on your end, because of how expensive the engines are to replace/rebuild, the value of a car that needs an engine is VERY low.

On a slightly unrelated note, I predict the value of cars in this condition to go up slightly as more people are willing to do Subaru engine conversions, but that could just be my own wishful thinking.

I don't predict the cost of engine rebuilds to go down any time soon for a lot of reasons, but mostly because of the unique nature of the engines, and the special tools/procedures involved. Maybe Jake could correct me though and give his own predictions on that.

Thanks all for your input. I guess your right. Even with the history of Boxster engine problems, at 82K miles and a 2003, Porsche has no obligation,etc. It just makes me so pissed. I maintained it impeccably, never raced it, bla, bla, bla. I was just sitting at a red light and more smoke than I have ever seen started spewing out of the tailpipe and then it died. No warning lights ever came on. I WISH I had been red-lining it! At least I could justify the failure somehow. I expected more from a Porsche engine. Hell, my 1980 Fiat Spider had almost 100K and I drove that harder than the Boxster.

I plan to cut my losses and sell as-is. I will let you all know how much I was able to get for it.

It could just be the AOS failing if it had never been replaced. I am sure the engine could fail without warning lights on the dash but I might do a bit more investigation before ruling it a total loss. Sorry to hear of your troubles.

It sounds like you just blew the AOS.. Whining is a symptom of one of the 3 ways the AOS can fail.

We pay cash for broken Boxsters and 996s, repair them and then sell them with our updates made.

A 2003 S model is worth about $16K-$22K depending on condition/mileage so it seems that installing a replacement engine in the car ($6,500: $4,500 eBay replacement 3.2 S engine with 58K miles + $2,000 installation & parts) would be worth the investment rather than selling it as a rolling chassis (~$5K).

Might be worth looking into. Not sure I could get the full 16K for it. Need to crunch the numbers. Appreciate the input.
