Doesn't the Lomborghini Murcielago Roadster have a ridiculous little roof thing like this that is only for roughly keeping the rain off? Maybe Porsche is just following suit. But like a Lombo roadster with no real top, this Boxster is meant to be a sunny weekend toy, not a daily driver. Who would buy a daily driver without AC or a radio? Absolutely it's pointless for every day use, that was not Porsche's intention!
Yes the weight savings should have been more, but from the styling you can tell where Porsche focused its efforts - the company wanted to make an exciting, wilder version of the Boxster. Most of the effort seems to have been expended on the visual appeal. In that area I feel they succeeded quite nicely.
