high mileage boxsters?
I'd like to see a list of people who achieved many miles without major failures...
|
My97
Just got mine thursday 133,000 miles and burning a lil coolant but still running
|
No major failure, you mean the car/engine is still running? I have 90K on my 2000 base and have been shaking up the poor little 2.7L engine with a lightweight flywheel for almost 40K now. Its a good thing its a convertible, because I keep looking up to see when the sky is going to fall.....
Ed  |
Cool, I have an 02 with tiptronic and 52,000. I love the car but got a little nervous reading the engine failure posts. sounds like Raby has a preventative fix.
I was sure there had to be some boxsters with lots of miles.... Thanks |
1998 2.5L with 83k miles, 2nd owner, well maintained, stock original motor, trans & clutch, and never a drop of oil on the garage floor. She now has about 25 AX/track days with the only significant expense being tires, brakes and gas. We just did a thorough inspection on the whole car and she came through with flying colors. Still quite a sweet ride.
|
I have a 2002 2.7 manual with just under 80,000. I have put on 16,000 of that as the second owner. All original equipment. The only repairs I have made are a brake light switch, replaced the A/C display, and a right front marker light bulb. Runs great. Accelerates in 5th gear like no vehicle I have ever driven.
As for oil leaks, to quote Johnny Bench from an old Krylon Spray Paint Commercial, "No runs, No drips, No errors." :) |
We've seen several with higher mileages. We've done valve cover re-seals on some, a starter or two, head gaskets on two, lots of water pumps, an alternator or two, plenty of clutches but generally the cars seem to hold up well. Only concern for a car that is running well is the IMS bearing, which we recommend updating with the LN part.

Highest '02 base I know of is around 230k miles by now
and a daily driver. Heck he has taken it on 5k+ trips after 200k. No work inside the engine.
So can your car go on forever? Darn near. He changes oil every 5k and pretty routine stuff other than that. |
2000 S with 124,xxx miles. I bought it in Feb '06 with 60,000 on it. I change the oil every 5,000. I've added headers, guttted the cats, and opened up the muffler (the sound is phenomenal!). I also added an EVO intake with AEM dry-flow filter. The struts were replaced with K-sports, and I've got R-comps for AXing. There are a few other mods here and there.
I've AXed the car for 3 seasons, winning the Boxster class with the local PCA, and finishing in the upper third with the SCCA and another local organization. No babying here. She runs great, doesn't use much oil, and hasn't given me any headaches other than the expected stuff: AOS, CV boots, MAF. Oh yeah, original coolant tank and clutch! |
2005 2.7L with 76,600 miles. Basic maintenance and one AOS replacement.
The car's still a blast to drive and driven nearly every single day as it has for the last 4+ years. |
I don't know if it is considered high mileage but here we go.
2002 2.7 5-speed. 87k miles. Its my DD and It sees all kinds of weather and driving conditions. Havent had any major probles yet... Knock on wood. Just replaced the AOS, RMS slowly leaks, CV boots are starting to crack (this weekends project). Clutch biting point is prety high but doesn't slip yet. Fairly reliable car so far. |
97 with 128K. Second owner, no major services. Feels like I'm going to need a new tranny soon though.
|
Not Knocking on wood
Marine surveyers knock on wood to find out if there is any dry rot. I don't need to find anymore rot on our sailboat, it has plenty already.
2000 S with 103,000 miles, just the usual stuff and a finicky 2nd gear shift which I hear is fairly typical for these years. Bought it a year and a half ago and put 7500 miles on it. Just did my first DIY oil change and I appreciated all the jacking threads. Car is so low my floor jack wouldn't even go under it. Got spoiled owning the van for so long. Didn't have to jack it up to change the oil on it! Just put down the cardboard and slide under it with a wrench and a pan. FYI, don't waste your time with a Harbor Freight cap style oil filter wrench. It doesn't fit the Boxster oil filter housing very well. I was only able to get it to work by modifying it on the lathe to get it to seat deeper on the plastic housing. Most of you don't have access to a metal lathe. Just bought a OBD II reader also. Now I can deal with those CELs without having to go to the shop or $tealership. :p Met a friend for lunch last week and the waitress loved the Pcar. Didn't have to twist her arm to get her to sit in the car for a pic. This place blew me away, they have over 400 different kinds of bottled beer for sale and 700 different wines too, unreal. |

How much should I expect that to run me?
|
I just bought an 02 Boxster with 70K on it, is there anything I should be worried about?

Bought my base 01 in sep-06 with 60k miles. it now has 108k. only issues were a water pump ($700), ignition switch ($25 diy), and a taillight. it's a daily driver (90 miles a day). great car. oil changes at ******************************** bavaria every 5-7k miles. reliable.

Classify "major" failure? I have replaced/repaired items already that, when compared to a Honda or Toyota, would be considered major... starter, climate display, and a future motor mount... items that just don't fail in the Jap cars.
|
97,000 miles on my 2000 2.7. Only changed a few ignition switches and a oil seperator. Love it. I bought it at 55k miles and it's my daily driver.
|
I'm almost to 91000 on my 99. It has the LN bearing. I've been replacing parts as I go. She still runs great! I think a starter is in order soon though.

98 with 98k miles
After driving the 2010 Cayman S I am really pleased with how tight the 98 feels compared to a brand new model. replaced ignition switch cleaned MAF replaced some body trim regular maintainence My wife drives it every day and it is such a great car I am buying another one for me! |
Good thing my 06 isn't a daily driver! I already have just under 34k on it!
No problems, at all. My 2007 DD Mazda CX7 just got it's 120k maintenance - $564.00 so the Boxster's maintenance is not that bad, and it only needs one every 20k miles. |
So far it seems I have one of the oldest and most high mileage car to reply on this thread.
Built June of 97... now currently has 145k miles on the 2.5 tip... still the origional engine and transmission. Replaced the waterpump last summer, replaced the starter 6 months ago (bad solenoid), and now just developed an oil leak (soon to be fixed) Other than general maintenance.... she runs strong and true  ***Knock on wood*** Cheers  |

2001 111,000 just told I need tubes and seals but told engine is in great shape no other problems
|
I got my '02 2.7 in 2007 with 56,000 miles on it. I now have 98,400 miles and no major mechanical issues or repairs. Just a new MAF and regular maintenance. Next oil change tomorrow. :troll:
|
oh yeah I did have to replace my water pump as well. And I replaced my original plastic window top with a retro fit glass top.
|
A little over 74k miles on my 03 base with a trip and no problems so far. I've put 9k on it since I got it the last week of June in 09. From what I have read on here the cars with the high miles do not appear to have as many problems as the low mileage cars. I read a post a while back from some one that had a only put about 4k miles on their Boxster in 4 years. I like driving mine too much to let sit in the garage. IMHO
|
1998 fin made boxster,88k on it, no major problems ,original water pump, original aos ,etc ,only had to buy a new maf,and sway bar links ,I would say this is almost bullet proof,it's way more reliable than my one owner , Chevy 1998 s10 4.3 ,with low miles
|
107,000 miles...1997 just re-installed engine after doing a re-seal and cam shaft chain tensioners, chains, AOS, clutch, IMS bearing engine was running fine when pulled...trying to proloooong it's life.

Mine is a 1997 with 73000 miles and already changed 2 maf sensors, 2 ignition switches, a clutch and flywheel and now one of the struts is leaking and I am considering to change all 4 but they are quite expensive, does anybody here here know any other brand instead of bilstein struts for the 986?

1998 Boxster Tip 120k
The 98 is going a little over 120k. The most important issue was a failed fuel pump (about $550 parts,1 hr labour). And of course replaced the MAF about 20k ago. Other than that routine annual service. Just starting my practice so hope shes makes it till I can jump to a 997 and garage her up...a reminder of school dayz.
Anyone know how to place a garage opener into the left panel of console? Many many thanks in advance. |
1998 Boxster With 224,000
I just recently bought a 98 boxster showing 222,000 on the clock. Ive drove if a couple thousand miles and cant seem to find any problems as of now. Suspension is nice and tight. Drives Great. Im sure its had some kind of service done over the years, But no leaks of any kind. Price seemed cheap so i had to buy it.....
|
'99 with 115K. So far just a replaced water pump, a bad tank of gas, and some seals on the transmission. It's going to need a new top sooner or later, the plastic is just starting to pull away from the canvas. I'd guess I've spent more money on tires than anything else.
Does anyone know if the DME tracks run hours or start/stop cycles? It'd be interesting to compare those between low mileage failures and high mileage cars. |
