We also taped a retrofit kit install at a local Porsche dealership in 1080 HD and I just need to find the time to edit it before posting. I'll have more autox video from tomorrow's Maywood Park a/x and I have video from Gingerman & Blackhawk to post too - just very busy as you'd probably imagine.

I have more to add as well.. Including video from Dyno sessions with 3.6 liter FSI big bore engines and etc..

This winter LOTS more DVD will be available.. Including a full engine assembly DVD!

Spin On Filter Adapter Installation Video
 

I just completed an oil change this weekend and after watching the video I was thinking about switching to the spin on filter adapter.

Jake, your video mentions that it is not necessary to drain the oil before taking off the filter and that approx 3/4 of 1 quart of oil will be lost. (I'll be sure to check the levels after and top off as needed...)

Should I be worried at all about more pouring out if the oil pan is full?

I have not removed the filter before when the car has been filled with oil; just a rookie looking for some reassurance that I won't leave a huge mess on the garage floor if I take off the housing and filter while everything is full.

No worries, BUT if the the car is unlevel or jacked up you may have an added loss of oil... Draining the sump is the best practice.

FWIW:
After I changed my oil last month, I noticed two oil gasket rings on the floor.(oops). So I tried to just loosen the filter and fit it over, but had to take it off. My car was jacked up in the rear and i only lost about 1/4 or less of oil.

Just drain a quart or two back into the containers to make sure you don't have overspill, but you should be fine :cheers:

Many thanks Jake - this has set my mind at ease knowing that I should not get a large oil puddle when I pull the housing and oil filter off. I may wait until my next full oil service for the swap...not sure at the moment.

MPToledo - I indeed saw that thread, but wasn't sure if you had taken the filter completely off, or just the housing to get the o-ring back on the canister. Thank you for your input. I was imagining a steady stream of oil flowing out once the filter itself was pulled out and off.

Thanks, tnoice. :cheers: As a long time fan of Jake and Charles (from 914 circles), I appreciated the nudge to join YouTube and subscribe to my first channel.

I have and love the spin-on filter adapter, and plan the 160 thermostat next, so would love to see that install. Charles also tells me they are also working on a fan mod to push more air earlier at low speeds. :)

My IMS upgrade will not happen until next year after I pay property taxes this winter.

I hope everyone will support these innovators who are on their way to doing as much for the M96 world as previously for the Type IV community.

Yea, I said WTF and figured "better safe than sorry". I was waiting on niagra falls of oil to start gushing out, but was pleasantly suprised. just make sure your engine is cool as it could really burn you.
