Coolant spewed everywhere!

So i'm at a light and i see white smoke, i pull in a parking lot and there it is gushing coolant everywhere from the engine bay. This car is killing me. I have a 3.6L but i'm sure the coolant hose are probably the same. Could this be like a head gasket or probably a popped off Coolant hose?? Thanks.

With as much coolant as you describe it is probably just a split hose.

When head gaskets fail on these engines (a very rare event, as far as I can tell, btw) the coolant tends to leak internally and end up in the oil or combustion chambers.

Coolant Leak

I had something similar happen. It turned out to be air in the coolant system causing the entire coolant tank to overflow. No repairs were necessary. Some others have had the same thing happen. Good luck!

It could be the water pump. my coolant went every where when my went. Also all the lights on my dash lit up because it broke the serpentine belt.

+1 - Waterpump

There should be no beer smile after the +1 on the water pump lil bastard lol. I've spent around 26K fixing this car already :(

My lights did not light up so im hoping it is a spilt hose! I will find out sometime today and come back to you guys.

If coolant spewed everywhere it could indeed be the WP. I had an experience where my 986 dumped a ton of coolant near the right rear wheel well. Turned out the only problem was a bad radiator cap.

BoxsterLewis 08-13-2009 10:34 AM

That's what im hoping, either a cap, cracked hose or tank!!!

I'm not sure if youre 3.6L engine is positioned in the engine bay the same way as the original engine was, but if so, and your coolant is coming out from the center rear of the car, I would say it is the water pump failing, as I noticed that was the case when my water pump failed. If, however, the coolant was leaking from under the front of the right rear wheel, then I'd say the leak is coming from either a bad coolant cap or coolant tank (I noticed this when my coolant tank failed). I think with the 3.6L engine, however, the coolant tank is on the left rear side, so you would see leaked coolant there if the tank was the culprit.

On my 3.6 everything is in the same place as the 2.5 that was removed.

BoxsterLewis 08-14-2009 10:48 AM

Yes the Coolant was coming from the right rear wheel. The shop called and thier first diagnosis was a bad thermostat. The coolant was getting to hot and it had to escape from somewhere such as the cap, etc. I havent read this but at least its a cheap part if that fixes it!!

Paul 08-14-2009 02:18 PM

What makes you think it's a cheap part?

Paul 08-14-2009 02:23 PM

I guess this might be considered CHEAP

urban_legend 08-14-2009 03:28 PM

and "as long as we are in there"

new waterpump, new s-belt, porsche brand coolant.

Yea, that's for the whole assembly incl. housing. The factory manual details just swapping the t-stat. It includes using a special tool - basically a drift to compress the t-stat which is then turned to pull free from the housing, installation being the reverse.

The problem may be that the t-stat alone is not much less than the whole assembly - Boxster t-stat

I went ahead and bought a 160 deg one from Jake Rabys site since he shows dynos with improved performance on a cooler T-stat. Might as well spend another 100 for 5 extra HP.
I cant seem to get ahold of him though as the site charged me for 2 and not one.

His Dad is in the hospital, so he has been out of work.

BoxsterLewis 08-18-2009 05:12 AM

I'm sorry to hear that.

Does no one else help out with his site or orders? Seems like a lot to do for one person.
