Stereo problems

I have a 2003 Boxster S and the stereo has a mind of it's own.
When it works, it sounds great. When I start the car, I get a message "System Error: amplifier not available". If I get that message the stereo will not work while the car is running. If I drive for approx 1 hour and shut the car off......magic, the stereo works for a day of two and then no luck again for awhile.
One dealer said it is the battery. Another said there is nothing wrong with the battery. The stereo also has the navigation system in it so to replace the entire stereo/nav system will be expensive (in Canada). I have noticed that the amp gets very hot when the stereo is working and the fan to cool it is not spinning.
Any advice ??
