50 Weight Oil?

I saw a post or two where someone was recommending Castrol 5W-50. I know the 50 weight is for the warmer weather is this ok for the Boxster and colder climates?

How many of you are using the 50 weight oil?

Just my 2 cents!!

I have had a lot of PM's from some people who are a whole lot smarter than me on this subject. The general consensus is Castro syntec 10W40 for almost all climates. That was after about two weeks of painstaking research. Most experts recommend oil changes of no more than 7500 miles or once a year. Now this depends on your driving habits and if you track it. I don't, but if you do, then you should change more often. Check out the this thread.

yes this subject has been beatin to death, but I empathize with anybody that is still confused as the experts will not come out and officially endorse an oil!!

I second Castrol Syntec 10W40...I've used it, though my usually flavor is Royal Purple (the Castrol is probably just as good and half the cost). xW50 weight oil is fine for warm/hot weather, but I wouldn't run it in winter...too thick.

Red Line 5-40 is also excellent.

The Porsche TSB has 0w-40, 5W-40, and I think one (Mobil 1 Peak Life) 5W-50 from various companies. Temp use ranges are listed, as are countries/areas of the world.

I use un-approved Motul 300V in 5W-40.

Some of the approved oils are barely adequate, and some I would not use if they were free. There is a world of advice available.

Use an ACEA A3/B3 or API SL or better. No SM or CJ oils.

Call or e-mail Charles Navarro at LN Engineerin for help/advice.
