blowing out hot air from vents

coming home i noticed that the vents were blowing a bit hot but didn't pay attention. went out to check my headlights and started the car and again the vent air was hot. hit the ac button and still hot, moved temperature all the way down to lo and still was hot. but when you turn the ignition off and just let the fan blow, the air cools down. the engine temp is where it is and no problem in terms of overheating. i changed the water pump and flushed the coolant about 1000 miles ago and had no problem like this before. car is a 00 2.7 with only 40k miles any ideas?

I had a similar problem with my car. I looked under the dash at the motors and arms that control the temperature flaps. The arm connecting the main temperature flap to it's motor had popped from its connection at the motor. With the ignition on, I cycled from low to hot and then back down again on the temp control while putting a bit of pressure on the connecting arm where it had popped out of its connection at the motor. When it lined up, it went right back in. It's a bit of a yoga move to stuff yourself under the dash, hold pressure against the arm/motor with one hand and reach up and blindly operate the temp controls with the other, but it can be done.
