Questions about air intake housing thingy...

I was waxing my baby(2001 "S") , and notice my drivers side engine air intake was different than my passanger side. I am talking about the rombus looking painted part not the black grill part. The drivers side sticks out about 1/8 of an inch or so, while the passangers is flush or even inset.

Can somebody check to see if theirs is the same and let me know. I know this is an odd request, but hell who doesn't like looking at their porsche? :D

It is like that on purpose. The driver's side intake housing takes in air while the pass, side expels engine heat. Since the driver's side sucks in air, they made it protrude out a bit to help deflect lit cigarette butts from entering your intake, cause it might cause a fire.

Thanks, it was driving me nuts. I googled the subject and looked at hundreds of pics on ebay but couldn't tell.

No problem. The earlier model yrs. had this issue where people threw out their cigarette butts out their window, and then they ended up getting sucked into the air intake, so afterwards, Porsche changed the design and added that protruding lip.

Also, I noticed mine has a screen in front of the snorkel so the intake can't ingest anything very big like a cig butt. I think the screen is unique to the 03/04 models but I'm not sure.
