Don't know the answer to your wrench question. I use a regular strap wrench but gently use it at the bottom of the filter cover where it won't distort the plastic. (Others may shout loudly against this. )

Tips-
Observe that the o-ring is on the bottom ring of the filter cap.
Oil the new ring so it's not dry when you put it back on.

Be sure you have a BIG drain pan. There will be LOTS of oil coming out.
