Performance Lust on a Budget...
For those that must have the best but only want to drive them occasionally, I came across this today on the net:
http://www.exoticcarshare.com/Fractional_Ownership/Flex_Plan_Fractional_Ownership.htm First I'd seen of this idea outside of vacation condos and Exec. Jets! They also offer rentals for those seeking even less time behind the wheel. |
Three years ago, I thought of doing fractional ownership of a new Boxster S with three other guys I know here in Houston. I decided, however, that this would not work well because of the issues of damage, storage, maintenance and "I had the car scheduled for the second week of March for my spring vacation and we cancelled due to bad weather... I want YOUR time in April."

The numbers just don’t add up to me. For instance, one of the cars was like $15K a year. I don’t remember which. But you could go to your local Porsche dealer and probably could get a TurboS, GT3, C4S . . . lease for around $1K a month. I guess what I am saying is that, this isn’t even remotely cheap. Are there really that many people who can afford $15K a year, but cant afford to actually buy the car in the first place?
Plus, 5 owners per car X 7 weeks is only 35 weeks. Were are the other 17 weeks? This is one of those things that sounds good when talking with your buddies in a bar, but when you start to break it down is kind of ridiculous. |
Leasing
This type of leasing is more apropos for a private airplane. Who wants to deal with the issue of whose day it is to get the car. Other issues, number of miles per person, car care, car abuse etc. In my busniness I provided cars and the guarantee was they would come back destroyed. That is my opinion and experience.
Never leased an airplane but the costs for the big companies make this arrangement feasible especially for jets. |
