Drive it like it was meant to be driven
 

I've seen that in various forms from a number of posters and forums.

I'd like to know what each of you out there really means by that.

How do you drive your Boxster the way Porsche meant it to be driven?

Whatever you want it to mean! :)

Shift at 2000 rpms, never exceed 2500 rpm, all corners taken slower than 15 mph, never any hard braking, nice slow start ups..... you know, drive like a typical 75 year old Corvette owner!

For me it means drive out to the beach with the wife, top down (car, not the wife), on Saturdays and throw on some R compounds and take it Auto-Xing on Sundays.

Very, very few cars can do both at the level the 986 S can.

Quickly, lots of shifting at 3M plus and playing "frogger" with the traffic in the morning.

Everybody has their own meanings. For me, some were:

Braking hard into turn 11 at CMP, literally hanging in the seatbelt, there are no brakes like Porsche brakes...

or slow-cruising through the restaurant district with the wife on a warm summer night...

or looking at the car from the rear quarter angle before I turned the garage light off, and noticing (again) what really pretty lines it had...

I don't think Ferdinand would object to any of those activities.

Don't be afraid to spend money on brakes & tires. Take it to the track. Drive often and drive hard.

Sorta like letting your woman buy shoes, clothes, and makeup. Take her out on a date and you know the rest...

As to what Rob said and also on my sig..although I didn't do AX last year due to other responsibilities :(

Not being affraid of breaking it with acceleration and braking

My car likes the upper rpm ranges and I like the sound. As soon as she's up to operating temp, I like to run her through the gears, on a twisty back road.

This around town stuff is too boring; that's what daily drivers are for.

Prior to crashing my old 99' I used to get it sideways entering onramps when people used to say 'let's go for a spin'. Funny thing is I crashed the car in regular driving switching freeways,not even fooling around,how boring.

No I just open it up on on ramps and take turns modestly far when no one is around. (this will change once I get another alignment and different tires in the rear)

If you will sign up for a PCA high speed driver's ed class you will learn what the statement means. It totally changed how I think about Porsches and my base model 2.5 liter boxster in particular.

Holy cow the car is amazing. It takes an act of God to get the back end to break loose under good track and weather conditions, which you can't say about all porsches but you sure can say about the Boxster (and the Cayman).

I drive mine like I just stole it every time I get behind the wheel now. I shift at 6k and take turns as late and wide as possible.

I'm sure I will burn through tires, brake components, and even control arms at this rate, but it's worth it. There is no substitute!

Dating right now
 

Having just bought my first Porsche, a Boxster with a few years on it, I think of this as on a date. Through cordial introductions so that we get to know each other and where we had been in life. Soon we will be wed and the honey moon will begin and passion will take us over and we will be speeding full steam ahead.

I will be looking forward to that time. Right now I don't want to break anything.

While I really like my Box for how it does on long freeway trips...
I'm always looking for a curve where I can push it to it's limits.

Running through the gears and braking are great, but pulling lateral G's while being held in place with snug-fitting GT3 seats in the car is a special treat, love those PS2's...

Not on the street, I hope

Randall, the last time I drove it like i stole it, I end up seeing red and blue flashing lights on my rear plastic window :D

Once the car is fully warmed up, every time I get the chance, I drive it as hard as conditions and safety allow. The street is not the track, so it's not like lapping, but its good enough. I don't fear using full throttle, shifting at peak power, and using up my brakes and tires - that's why I bought the car. I never race anyone on the street, and I always make sure my driving doesn't threaten the safety of other drivers, pedestrians, or cyclists.

I very rarely see other Porsche drivers (and there are plenty around here) driving their cars hard, I often wonder if they ever do.
