Problem giving copy of Boxster S title?
 

As many of you know I am selling my 2008 Boxster S and someone who said they were interested in it asked me for a copy of the title, which I copied, scanned & emailed to the person. That was 2 days ago and prior to me sending it they were emailing me left & right and now nothing. Maybe I am just being paranoid but is this something I should worry about if the person is a scammer? I cannot see what they would do with the title since it really does not have any information they could not get elsewhere, such as name, address, VIN#, etc., right?

did you send them a b&W copy of a high quality color scan?
did you send them a copy of the entire thing or was it just a portion of it?

it seems odd to me that someone would want to see the title of the car so bad they needed it emailed. what was the reason they claimed they needed to see it?

it sounds weird to me. i agree with you,, ,just having a copy of your title isn't going to allow them to necessarily commit identity theft, or some other financial crime,, but it gives them a start. i might park the car indoors for a while. :) not that a copy of your title would pass as genuine to anyone who knows what to look for - but if they had a really good color scan of yoru title - they would steal your car, and then try to fool someone by using the color scan as if it were legit. your car would be stolen one day, and for sale on craigslist for a really low price the next day - and they might try to sell it. tweakers will try all sorts of things to make money.... i kinda doubt that is what they are up to - but iw ouldn't take chances..

Thanks. He basically implied he wanted to see a copy of the title to make sure I was legit, and the title was clear/clean, which it is.

I sent him a scanned black & white copy in .pdf format - I cannot see how he could make it into a real one. I did notify my DMV office and am waiting for them to reply.

Yeah, I could see how he might be able to use it to scam someone else into thinking it is his car, etc. But my car is locked/alarmed in my garage all the time so stealing it is not really a possibility, especially where I live.

I work in law enforcement and a copy that you sent him does not have the seal or anything on it . It's a copy which no DMV would take. He would have to apply for a new tile and it would never happen. Also he would have to sign your name on the title I would not worry about it.
When I bought my car i made the guy send me a copy of the title and a copy of his drive's license for me to buy the car from him. DMV will only take orginal titles which have both signatures on them and then they will issue a new title to the person who bought it. If he signed your name to a copy of the title and tried to pass it off as a orginal one he could face criminal charges. Keep all the email conversations that you have had with him in a file and if anything comes about you have documention to back your side up. But like I said don't stress it.

Thanks much. I guess I became worried when he was very interested, asked for a copy of the title, and then stopped communicating. I guess he could be busy, have computer problems, etc. but it all seems a little funny.

I work for the US Army and reported the possible compromise to them since it happened/started by him emailing me at my us.army.mil email address.

I wish I could find out more about him (IP address, phone#, address, etc.) - if anyone here gets an email from a person named Kevin Greenier be careful, just in case he is a scammer. Here is his email address:

I don't think you have anything to worry about. He may use it to try and scam someone on ebay or the like, but he can't get to your car. Did he tell you what state he was calling from?

That is what I am thinking...he will try to scam someone else. And no, he only emailed me and said he is deaf and cannot use the phone.
